Sacramenno, California The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament

It’s so unbelievably embarrassing to be a professional tech reporter whining about corporate greed because the treat phone you want is priced too high for your liking, but it is very on brand as a mark of our Treatler society.

On Wednesday, Apple introduced a foldable iPhone, and at $2,000 it's the most expensive one yet.
The Duo, as its called, is passport-sized and essentially transforms into a mini tablet when unfolded.
While reviewers haven't had much hands-on time with the device, early impressions appeared to be largely positive. Then there's the price. CNET's Katelyn Chedraoui accused Apple indulging in corporate greed even though it already enjoys massive profits.
"I want an iPhone Duo," she wrote,
"but I refuse to pay that much."

This is a related and expanded graphic which emphasizes an important point: Higher speeds reduce your visibility and reaction time, making it more likely you'll hit someone or something, and then when you *do* hit them, it's more likely to be fatal.

A graphic that says Why Speed Matters

Below that are two stats:

Drivers yield 75% of the time while traveling 20 mph
Drivers yield only 17% of the time when traveling 37 mph

The next line shows that drivers have a much wider field of vision at 15 mph as compared to 30 to 40 mph.

Finally, there are three stats:

9 out of 10 pedestrians survive when hit by a car traveling 20 mph
5 out of 10 survive at 30
1 out of 10 surive at 40

Most speed cameras ticket at 11 mph over the limit. So I'm issuing my regular reminder that when it comes to a car hitting a pedestrian, each 10 mph increase in speed significantly raises the victim's risk of death. Chart source: walksf.org/our-work/cam...

A graph showing the various risk of death for a pedestrian hit by a car.

At 20 mph the risk is 10%, at 30 mph, it's 40%, and at 40 mph, it's 80%

I have been a huge fan of Abridged and have found their reporting to be such a great addition to the Sacramento region’s local news ecosystem. Definitely give them a follow if you’re a Sac/Yolo County local, they cover issues no one else devotes resources for anymore.

Hey, followers! Savanna here. I’m an editor at Abridged. We’re in the business of truth and transparency — and in that spirit, I want to share how we deliver the news on this Bluesky account 🧵

Pulisic’s Trump dance. Weah and McKennie staying silent in the Oval Office while Trump asks them whether they could play soccer with trans men. Pochettino sucking up to Trump on the phone. Among others. Even our best soccer writer is missing that this is a 2-way street. USMAGANT

US president Donald Trump has done the whole of American soccer a disservice by involving himself in the Balogun red card saga. It's an unsusprising overreach that confirms the negative perceptions many already have about the USA. Me, on @us.theguardian.com: www.theguardian.com/football/202...

If this team hadn’t already made itself a patsy over and over again to the worst of our present-day country, accepting this blatant corruption and cheating whose outcome will rightly be claimed by Trump has made them utterly pathetic. Unamerican and cowardly to their core. A victory would be a loss.

Mai Vang, endorsed by Sacramento’s local DSA chapter, was among the most enthusiastic votes for abolishing single family zoning in Sacramento asking “How can we get more plexes built in my district” Her incumbent opponent, Doris Matsui, wrote a letter to kill a bike lane project a few years back.

Probably not a coincidence that the only CA city plausibly sending a socialist to Washington is Sacramento which builds a lot of housing

One calculation that blew my mind: When I push a pedestrian beg button to cross an arterial road w/ 40 mph spd limit. Wait of 90 sec means a car 1 mile away gets to priority to clear the intersection before I am allowed to cross the road. I am standing roadside breathing particulates

They installed a full size traffic light on the new section of walk/bike path by the airport Drivers are much more likely to stop at a regular looking traffic light than a HAWK or RRFB But its timed so you have to wait 90 seconds in the hot sun while people sitting in air conditioning get priority

Water spills over the sea wall at the San Francisco Embarcadero amid a king tide. The tidal anomaly at the time of recording was 1.4 ft and www expected to increase to 1.7ft within the hour. A 2-foot anomaly, the highest summer tide on record, was forecast Sunday evening.

California politics has a lot of complete dumbos who think they are wiser than Solomon, but I don’t think there’s a bigger discrepancy across such a long period of time and across so many issues between how much of a dumbass Glazer is and how much he thinks his contrarianism makes him brilliant.

Steve Glazer (Orinda) is the face of opposition to Connect Bay Area in the media. His opinions about transit are incoherent. He wants flat fares for BART so trips to/from Antioch are cheaper, but he also wants BART to cut spending and opposes the regional measure. www.politico.com/newsletters/...

From Truckee to Miami, the pressure to socialize how climate change has made certain places unbelievably risky needs to be resisted by talking about how the changing climate will not go back. More warming and worsening extreme conditions are baked in for another 30 years at least.

Peter Gleick@petergleick.bsky.social · 3mo ago

More people need to understand that this is absolutely a cost of #climate change; one of many new costs because our politicians dawdled and did nothing despite decades of warnings from scientists.

On one hand, I’m so glad to see bills responding to the License to Kill reporting move forward. But even more infuriating than reading quotes from pro-murder advocates like Debt Free Justice is the fact that these conditions exist and are being reformed so minutely. calmatters.org/investigatio...

Eight bills related to License to Kill advance in the Legislature

California has experienced a surge of roadway deaths. CalMatters reporters found officials allowed dangerous drivers to stay on the road.

Static maps will increasingly shield us from reality. 3-5 million years ago (the last time that atmospheric CO2 ppm was around 420ppm), sea levels were 50-80 feet higher. There will be a lag: we are physically changing the atmosphere much faster than other systems can respond. Just a matter of time.

“Even if you stopped climate change today, New Orleans’s days are still numbered,” he added. “It will be surrounded by open water, and you can’t keep an island situated below sea level afloat. There’s no amount of money that can do that.” www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026...
