Alright now that I’m home I guess it’s time to officially announce some really good news: I have received an NIH R35 MIRA!! This award will fund five years of research in my group using Aiptasia to study context dependency and GxGxE interactions in animal-microbe symbioses!
My lab at @stonybrooku.bsky.social Dept of Ecology & Evolution is recruiting a 2-year Postdoc! They will split time between genomics and symbiosis dynamics of cnidarians 🪸, and the development of STAGdb. Start date as early as Sept 2026. Please share this post with anyone who might be a great fit!

Hey #ICRS2026! Genevieve's talk is today and she has lots of lab stickers to share! Say hi so she doesn't return home with any (and, more importantly, because her dissertation is cool)! 9:20am, room 517, session 104! innovators-icrs2026programme.eventsairsite.com?agendaId=d28...

Hey coral pals! I’m sitting #ICRS2026 out. BUT one of my wonderful PhD students, Genevieve Dallmeyer-Drennen, is representing the lab! Her talk is Fri 7/24, 9:20am, rm 517. This is her 1st ICRS & she’s en route with lab stickers! 🧪 innovators-icrs2026programme.eventsairsite.com?agendaId=d28...
Throughout my dad’s journey with Alzheimer’s, he’s become less conversant. So whenever he comes up with new one-liners, we savor it. Today in #eldercare, Dad started singing (in Hebrew) in the dentist’s waiting room. Then, as the hygienist greeted him, he asked about getting a “window view.”
The #CNYASM newsletter is worth reading the whole thing! There is a pet feature on the last page! Very proud of my (former) feral cat! 🐾

I am happy to share one of the most exciting collaborative papers co-authored with scientists and artists around the world about the coral reef crisis and how to help address it 🌊🌎🧪🪸🌐🐡🧬🦠🌿🦑 @coralartscience.bsky.social shorturl.at/IaN1H
Communicating coral: Art and science for global reef action
Coral reefs are experiencing unprecedented rapid decline. Art can act as a beacon to engage audiences, influence policy, and inspire global action.

It's Tuesday! Time for a new episode of #MattersMicrobial! This time, Dr. Hannah Reich joins the #QualityQuorum to discuss phycosymbiosis: how bacteria and algae interact! This was recorded at ASM Microbe. @univpugetsound @ASMicrobiology youtu.be/f6irLu3BWg0?...
Forgot to acquire photographic evidence but joined in on our 'wednesday wiffles' ⚾ for the first time this season. My faves part of #SummerScienceShenanigans! Thanks for making this & the ice pops happen, @micromaresca.bsky.social !!
Love the irony that the @psaalgae.bsky.social meeting I almost didn’t go to wound up being my new faves conference ever. 🤦🏽♀️ Celebrating algae & adventuring around Juneau, AK was incredible, but the #newPI x #Phycophile reunion made it extra special. 🌊 🧪 #PhycologyWithoutApology
I’m sick of hearing about this and being messaged about it but this article is good. Any scientist with even a rudimentary knowledge of algae could fix this problem fairly easily for under $16 million. You can give that money back to the NSF. In fact, you could fund 100 3-year GRFs with $16M.

Happy #PhycologyFriday from my bluesky-less PhD student Stefan’s #Symbiodiniaceae stock cultures. Excited for him to start his first culture experiment this month! Looks like the Fe & P limited media are working their magic 🤓🧪
It’s out! There are so many fun back stories with this project’s origin story & how it reshaped my career trajectory. For now, plz welcome my lab’s culture collection of #Symbiodiniaceae associated bacteria! & the many siderophores they produce! 🧪 doi.org/10.1093/fems...

Best part of being back in the office post conference is sharing the “free stuff haul” with my students 🤓🤑 Thanks, #ASMicrobe!
Had a blast at my first #ASMicrobe! Heading home from DC to unpack only so I can repack for #PSA2026 this weekend! My plan for “not traveling much this summer” gradually went out the window this spring… Stoked for the #newPI x #phycophile reunion next week!
And that’s a wrap on another fabulous #ASMicrobe! However, what makes the conference so special is really the COMMUNITY!
Watching #MattersMicrobial podcast live in #ASMicrobe Studio featuring @hannahgreich.bsky.social and @markowenmartin.bsky.social talking about symbiosis and corals 🪸

Absolutely loving all of the goodies that come along with #ASMicrobe. Gathering lots of trinkets to bring home to my students! 🤓
