First 250 words: I am six months old when my owner drowns me.
I think. It’s what the godservant explains to me. That I, a female juvenile black shorthair cat, die of asphyxiation by drowning at 2:53A.M. on Sunday, May 31st, 2015, in Poppyfield, Michigan, in a puddle formed in my owner’s front lawn by a recent flash flood.
But it’s not what I remember. I remember shaking, thrashing, screaming for the hands forcing me down to stop until the muddy water flooding into my lungs buys him my silence. That I have no strength anyway, a sack of bones in fur and some cracked keratin for claws grazing hairy, damp skin. That I’m going to die, and that as my life slips from me, so too does my pain.
Until I wake up again. I lie on the lawn once more, my neck still raw. The sun’s beams bleach everything around me, from the short dry grass to the house’s peeling white paint.
Except there is no peeling. Why do I know what peeling is?
The house stands as new as an office shirt before morning coffee. Why do I know what morning coffee is?
The building towers an extra story. A dog barks from somewhere within. He has no dogs.
I push off the grass, shaking away foggy drowsiness, but the blades prickle me. I assess my arms—flesh. Pinkish hands, like the ones that killed me.
I jolt. My spine doesn’t flex the way I remember. Panic courses through me.
“Do you want to become a god?”

Anora is the quick-thinking manager of an illegal casino, fleeing the assassination of her gang's boss with the hyperspace treasure maps thrust into her hands as he died.

Jayro is a mouthy interstellar smuggler from the wrong side of the hyperspace lane with the only ship that can get Anora off Hecate IV before the emperor's relic-hunting space witches close a net around the planet.

The two bad-at-feelings bisexuals try to tamp down simmering, inconvenient attraction as they are forced to work together with the scrappy, tight-knit crew of the Helle Wanderer to survive in the criminal underworld and discover the secret at the end of the dangerous maps.

Their love story is a heist and they're stealing more than each other's hearts.

Jayro felt annoyance rising up in him again. The cockpit was his domain. Never mind that he agreed with her about the deco. “It took Fish weeks to get those programs running!”
“Look, unless you want to meet an asteroid face to face, shut the hells up and let me work.” Anora frowned as she watched some data return from the program. “Call engineering.”
“Gladly.” Jayro opened the channel on his wrist communicator.
“Yeah?” Fish’s voice responded.
“The new navigator is having trouble with her—” Jayro broke off as Anora grabbed his forearm and yanked his wrist in front of her own face, causing his chair to whirl towards her.
“What on-boards are your pre-sets accounting for?” she asked into the communicator without a glance at him.
“The hyrdobeacon,” crackled Fish’s reply, “the fore and aft isotrope routers…and the gravitic drive buffer, I think.”
Jayro was frozen as Anora swiped at the nav one-handed. He could feel her warm breath on his palm as she spoke with Fish through his communicator, her hand gripping his forearm almost burning him through his flight jacket. She was close enough to smell the blaster emissions wafting off her, the sharp, citrus scent of the steam bath clinging to her skin. His fingertips were millimeters from her cheek and he wanted to cup her face in his hand and drag her around to look at him with those bright eyes. He wanted to play with the flyaway bit of hair that had missed her ponytail and brush his thumb over her lips until they parted.

Reunited on the waves, Osian and Delphine's spark strengthens. Then a deception within the crew locks a cruel enemy from Osian's past onto their tail, one who will stop at nothing to end his life. While Osian is eager to forget the reward, the pirates want Otto's life if the mission fails.

Delphine must decide whether to trust the man she's falling for, or betray him to save Otto.

Their eyes met. Delphine pinned him with her expectant stare, and he worried again whether she could rummage around his mind for the answers she sought.

What could he say? She’d no doubt find him obsessive if he told her the truth – how he’d spent so many waking moments wondering if she remembered their one dance as fondly as he did, when moonlight had clung to her hair and tickled her face as she’d taunted him beneath the stars. How he’d been so relieved to see her on board his ship, in a way he couldn’t put into words.

How he hadn’t managed to get rid of the smell of sugar since meeting her, and didn’t want to.

Would he have regretted her kiss?

“No, Ceraid.” He swallowed, shuffling under the weight of the question. “I could have never regretted it.”
