The Senate named the sanctions bill they voted to advance today after Lindsey Graham. A bill that will kill more Iranian children while also giving unchecked authority to Trump: honoring Graham exactly as he would have wanted.

Tired: The Roman Empire fell because of Christians and foreigners and moral decay Wired: The Roman Empire never fell (a la PKD) Inspired: The Assyrian Empire never fell

I am aware that writers don’t pick titles in the NYT but I’d like to suggest that Gibbon’s magnum opus isn’t “the definitive” book on empires. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/13/o... (🎁🔗) Why? Well, I don’t believe “exotic” foreigners introduce “moral decay” & I think the Byzantine Empire is worthy of note.

it's fun to see the few occasions where this guy finally feels brave enough to stake a clear position. this platner guy? i feel i can now stake a (~)definitive position. gaza "genocide" (some say it is, others dispute) still assessing, can't say much with certainty about its goodness (or vice versa)

Repeat after me: I am not fiercer than Sabrina Carpenter. I am not fiercer than Felix Biederman. I am not fiercer than Glenn Greenwald. I am not fiercer than MovieBob. But if I stand back and watch and learn, I will be fiercer than I am.

This is why I find the Platner discourse so off-putting: people in these Electoral Fandoms doing victory laps or shamefully retreating to silence in response to a rape victim who’s become a side character in their video game or show, with all the care, dignity, and genuine concern that entails.

This is what I wrote about Platner back in October of 2025, and I think it holds up okay. The popular movement that grew around him in Maine is real and inspiring, the guy himself was always fugazy at best. At this point I just hope the former outlasts the latter. defector.com/what-job-is-...

challenging to phrase this exactly right because it'd be in bad taste to use this as a gotcha against all his supporters, but the journalists who very explicitly framed Platner as a rejection of stuff like "HR Lady Politics" or (ugh) "smoothgroins" should take a long, hard, look in the mirror today

It's a funny thing these clowns do where they'll ask Mamdani about Israel and then take his comments later and go "interesting how he's not talking about these other countries. 🤔"
