So it's farewell to the History subject area at the University of Hertfordshire, not the first nor the last to go. One of the best departments in the country, just extinguished like a snap of the fingers. Think of the waste. (1/2)

Another piece in the cuts of funding for the humanities is visible in local record offices. The Somerset Archives are only open 3 days a week; Norfolk only 4 days a week. As a US grad student doing research in the UK, that would have made it impossible to write my dissertation.

If it's something I need to read I do not want AI summarising it for me. The point of reading is to be immersive, thoughtful, critical and analytical. It's not to have a few bullets, a bland interpretation, a corporate repackaging, and an entire loss of meaning.

I am once again begging universities to realise that staff - academic, professional services, estates, all of them - are the product they are trying to sell. Without staff there is nothing to sell. No amount of flashy buildings will replace staff in universities. UKHE is in freefall.

a machine that can fill in the gaps in the archives! this is distilled essence of so much of the techno-utopianism around LLMs and research. it fundamentally misunderstands: the *gaps* are the meaning. history is not the past, it is the processes of recording, then interpreting those records

Rebranding a hallucination as a ‘critical confabulation’ that can fill archival gaps is a big no from me.

All set for this evening’s @cont-brit-hist.bsky.social seminar at the @ihr.bsky.social with Dr Katja Seidel speaking on foreign policy entrepreneurship, expertise & gender. Should be fascinating.

A few years back I accidentally unearthed the first time that Marshall McLuhan coined "Understanding Media," in a 1958 letter by an advocacy group that brought him to the US on a fellowship to develop a syllabus on educational technology.
