the centrist argument against soft socialists is literally just "you'll make the money mad! then the rich will suspend the pretense of democracy and send in their nazi thugs to impose martial law!" but the money is already doing that anyway, it's obvious to anyone who isn't a massive racist

The media's takeaway from an El-Sayed win is the same as it would have been from a Stevens win, and the same as it will be if El-Sayed wins the general, or if he loses it: everyone, no matter who they are, needs to take several steps to the right.

"Electability" is a distant second to good policy and principles. If good policies and principles aren't electable, then the solution is to fix the electability, not to adopt bad policies and principles.

Wherever one stands on the applications of LLMs elsewhere, it ought to be clear that, at the _very_ least, it is insanely risky to make LLMs integral to children's education with so little study into the effects. Regardless, your $200/mo to these companies goes on to help push LLMs into classrooms.

Hey, friends! I put my big face in a video like the kids do! Time to join the @aimoratoriumnyc.bsky.social and tell @mayor.nyc.gov to enact a moratorium on "A.i." in the schools! Please share - and please tell the mayor you want a moratorium! www.nyc.gov/mayors-offic...

btw if one accepts this emerging idea that LLMs are just compilers and plain human language is code now... Congrats I guess on inventing a programming language that expands, rather than compresses, the data and phonemes needed to express the program, and must offset renewable energy gains to compile

The article btw was completely useless other than linking me to the actual inciting primary source, a GitHub issue it was basically summarizing (using the new LLM-era definition of "summary" where it's actually 10x longer than reading the actual source).

Wasted some time on what at first appeared to be an interesting technical writeup. About a graf in realized the text was almost certain LLM-generated. Skimmed until I found halfway through the post it was hocking an LLM-driven fork of a piece of software the maintainers had already rejected as trash

That Dem leadership isn't vocally opposing data center construction, an slam dunk 80/20 split across the spectrum, is merely the latest thing that tells you all you need to know about the positions they supposedly take only ~reluctantly~ re: immigration, trans rights, etc.

It's so condescending! It's insulting to the "middle of the country" to be like yeah, we've got to push right-wing social policies to appeal to inbred mouthbreathers (how she sees "real America"), and screw "the coasts" because they'll fall in line. And honestly, fuck that shit.

"The role of the university is even lost on many, so bears repeating: produce knowledge & educate at the highest level. AI destroys both at their core." 👏👏👏 I want to do scholarly work well, as slow as it needs to be, not be "efficient." In fact, everybody should be allowed to do their jobs well.

If useful, here's my attempt to process my feelings about how I feel sadly kinda — or rather very — sick from all this AI fascist nonsense as an academic. 😶‍🌫️ I'd be pleased if even one person finds something useful because there's something to be said for processing this all together, so, um, enjoy?

Capitalism requires the acceptance of wife and child beaters in positions of power. Even if you do well yourself, there’s always a wife and child beater with more capital than you. Besides, who else are you gonna hire to make sure the poors keep their hands your private property? There are rules.

tech dudes will keep watching the backlash faced by people in other fields for using AI and thinking "that won't happen to me, I'm special" like they always have done

We're in the era of incompetence & cybercrimes headlined as "unprecedented model capabilities gone rogue." So OpenAI & Anthropic are trying to one up each other with such incompetence because the "press release as a service" performing media & clueless politicians parrot pre IPO CEO talking points.

Anthropic claiming their model went rogue days after OpenAI made their claim (itself days after an abysmal report on their ad revenue pilot) is strongly reminiscent of kids playing make-believe superheroes and one-upping each others’ claimed superpowers like nuh uh mine does infinity times infinity
