California just adopted a law to guarantee that... kids who are detained in the state are guaranteed the right to hug family members who visit them. On the one hand, at least they have that right now. On the other hand, wtf? boltsmag.org/california-p...

This New Law Will Make It Easier for Californians to Visit Family in Prison - Bolts

Families of incarcerated people have long faced arbitrary denial of visits and harassment by prison staff. They advocated for reforms that passed last week.

Now’s probably a good time to say that a couple years back I turned down a five-figure offer from HarperCollins because they refused to put in a clause prohibiting AI from touching any of my books at any point in the process. I was lucky to be able to walk away, and it was the right thing to do.

Workers at three major publishing houses tell WIRED that LLMs are being used for publicity, cover art, back cover copy, and emails, as some execs push junior staff to champion the tech.

I think, if I’m being honest with myself, this is the main reason I refuse to touch these things. More so than being environmentally dilligent, even more so than wanting to avoid being a thief. I am very good at my job. I enjoy being very good at my job. I do not want to become less good at my job

We're living in the world they've always promised: A Christian-tinged hellscape where the divide between the rich and poor is monumental. And they never thought there might be some consequence to starving people and taking away their medicine.

These people think they are coy and do racist things, but say, "I haven't said anything racist, so how can I be the racist? It's actually you who is the racist," and there is a hunger for people to just call it what it is right to their faces. It's why Collins and Rogers look so weak.

When the political opposition basically says every day, "Sure, we're corrupt, but what are you going to do about it?" paying consultants in the mold of Jim Carville to "find a bridge to bipartisanship" belies the fact that most people can see the corruption with their eyes, and they fucking hate it

The point isn’t abandoning material concerns; it’s refusing the false choice. Voters can care about grocery bills and whether a government treats people as disposable—and leaders sound stronger when they say so plainly.

After seeing so many elites—in business, media, politics, more—eagerly jump on board with Trumpism fascism, or weakly acquiesce to it, the public is craving leaders who act like this awfulness is serious and bad. Yes, the public. The real public. A majority of the people, not only right-wing volk.

Instead of shying away from the values of democracy, pluralism, and rights—as many consultants and pundits urge—Ossoff asserts those values. Look at what he’s gotten so much praise for: calling a white nationalist a “white nationalist” and treating that as bad. As a reason to vote against someone.

No “I’ll hurt immigrants too” or “I’ll repress trans people too” with a “that’s just what voters believe” rationalization. No treating “working class” and “white working class” as interchangeable synonyms. No effort to court tech oligarchs. No “Charlie Kirk was practicing politics the right way.”

Ossoff is acting like Trump/MAGA/GOP and what they’ve done to the country is Actually Bad. Charismatic and well spoken, which sure helps. But no “my friends across the aisle,” no acting like the imaginary “Baileys” are the only ones who matter, no “don’t talk values, only kitchen table.” That’s it.

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register
