Not only no culture, but no *commons*. The dependency on the capitalist overlords will be complete, because you can’t ask for help or context from others when there is no common frame of reference. This has already happened in coding, the first space where they destroyed the commons we’d all built.

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

A recent 🧡by @elisewang.bsky.social explains the difficulty of finding executioners in medieval Europe. It’s an excellent 🧡. I find a similar thing in my research: even those tasked with executing people didn't want to stick around to watch them die. They left if they could. bsky.app/profile/elis...

A return to firing squad everywhere might finally end the death penalty. Why? Because people have to be directly involved in executions (not pressing a button) it’s terrifically difficult to get them to do it. Medieval executions had the same problem!

So many things wrong with this "deal," but also: it's not a "massive" amount. If we actually receive 1,800,000 tons of diesel from Russia, that's equivalent to: * 3.3 days of US consumption, or * 10 days of US *exports*. It's a drop in the bucket. We send more than that overseas every two weeks.

Trump: "I think you heard about the oil deal with Russia. That is a big deal. That is massive amounts of oil coming into our country, and I want to thank President Putin to be honest with you."

Anthropic is out with new nonsense about Claude (or the collection of models called Claude) deserving moral consideration and/or be able to feel distress, so my inbox is filling up with journos asking me to comment. I've also got a day job, so here is a brief set of public comments on this: >>

A key part of the cognitive omnishambles in which we find ourselves is that everything now has a shitty AI generated summary that purports to tell you what's inside, but that no one ever checks for accuracy.

Hard to overstate how much Hegseth's execution stream mirrors the U.S. military's traditional description of ISIS propaganda: broadcast killings designed to send a message, strike fear and create a social media spectacle. Will almost certainly be repurposed by online terror cells

Wil Canada inlijven.

Ossoff: "I think Pete Hegseth is frankly a deeply unwell person who seems to relish this kind of brutality all the while he's running a department that is falling into chaos. The guy cannot run the military competently and is spending his time with this kind of obscene medieval spectacle."

The proposition of sentience or intelligence is part of the AI Industry’s agnotology gambit. Just as Big Tobacco funded red herring research to flood public discourse with doubt, so this industry poses inane talking points as existential questions and even funds research into them.

I can’t stress enough that this notion of if and when It will gain consciousness is Bible fanfic. It’s not real.

What actually happens in this kind of situation is that mom curses under her breath and takes over, because she knows that reading to a child is about the *experience* of parental engagement, not the mechanics of hearing a voice. He feels clever and smug because he’s unloaded the task either way.
