Something Shoup didn’t contend with is cities becoming addicted to meter revenue which then can get in the way of converting these spaces to other uses like bikeways. This has certainly happened in Berkeley, & we need strategies to counter that tendency.

Completely absurd. LA's Dept of Transportation and the local community approved the road improvements but Karen Bass personally intervened to delay it, which became bad press for her. So now conveniently the *state* stepped in to ban improvements on *just that one street*.

This is one of the highest priority project segment on the 2013 Regional Bike Network’s Early Action Program. There’s multiple schools on it, it connects the OLT transit center, a cyclist was killed on it in 2022 and there’s no commitment to completing a project here.

I think most people really don't grasp the extent to which bike infrastructure and safe streets are life and death for cyclists. It's not just the risk we personally face each day, but also the injuries and deaths of friends and family. If you encounter an "angry cyclist" online there's a reason.

For my California peeps - in early 2010’s when we were pitching Class IV protected bikeways to finally be recognized in the CA Veh Code we said “imagine a Class I path experience on the road, just for bikes.” (terse, CA-centric, but more than 5 words)
