If RFK Jr had come from a previous generation of Kennedys they would have lobotomized him. And scholars would speak of it as “history’s only justified lobotomy”

I've been publishing books for young readers for 23 years. In the past three years, there's been a huge change. The discourse is fraught. Now I am regularly accused of being a "groomer" a "pornographer" and a "pedophile." For writing kids books. It's horrible. And nonsensical. And not okay.

"A 23-year-old in Kansas started applying for jobs at fast-food joints and at movie theaters after failing to find work as a paralegal. He answered the phone for one job interview and realized he was speaking to an A.I. agent." I truly despise the anti-Gen Z discourse. They were raised in dystopia.

A 22-year-old with an undergraduate degree in biology has applied for 511 jobs and counting. She was recently rejected from a role at Whole Foods after being “interviewed” by a chatbot named Sage.

A 23-year-old applying for administrative jobs in Texas keeps being asked to videotape himself, alone in his apartment, answering questions about his qualifications.

A 23-year-old in Kansas started applying for jobs at fast-food joints and at movie theaters after failing to find work as a paralegal. He answered the phone for one job interview and realized he was speaking to an A.I. agent.

The New York Times recently asked members of Gen Z to write to us about what it feels like to be searching for a job right now. They described a process that is lonely, opaque and impersonal, in which it is hard to tell whether one is being rejected by a hiring manager or an A.I. screener.

The problem is not just that hiring has slowed across the labor market, or that the specter of A.I. is threatening entry-level positions, they said. It was that they could not get a real, live human being to speak to them. Ever. About anything.

I hope the person making lonely vent posts at 3am will be okay. I hope the person barely scraping by will be okay. I hope the people bereft of comfort, too desolate, too tired, too beaten down by their day-to-day, will be okay.

There WILL BE less people like Patrick Stewart or Dolly Parton, given widening wealth inequality, loss of jobs in creative sector, austerity, privatisation of education (especially arts) & financial exclusion. Art of the near future will be less diverse & restricted to the privileged few.

Patrick Stewart's passing feels a whole hell of a lot like Dolly's. It's hard to imagine that singular talents found in people born in the working class or working poor will get fostered the ways theirs were. The things that nurtured those talents have been stripped for profit by assholes.
