“With deft care, a critical eye, & an oh-so-rare appreciation for the true complexity of what brought people into the Black freedom struggle, this close study of Lillian Smith’s life and activism gives us all hope in this current moment of brutal hatred & intolerance.” @historianheather.bsky.social

Up late reading @historianheather.bsky.social’s Blood in the Water on the Attica prison uprising in upstate New York in 1971 and was compelled to tab this scene — incisive writing
Fear and Fury: The Reagan Eighties, the Bernie Goetz Shootings, and the Rebirth of White Rage by Heather Ann Thompson. Very detailed and upsetting history of a very violent crime, and how it's linked to today
In contrast “Beyond simply disputing the deplorable racial scripts that defined the Goetz trial at the time, Fear and Fury also offers a clarifying look at the pernicious interlacing of race, crime, and capitalism surrounding Goetz’s attack and the ensuing trials.”

Finished reading “Fear and Fury” by @historianheather.bsky.social. A powerful account of the tragedy that eschews the media sensationalism for restoring dignity to the true victims of the shootings. A sobering and sadly all too relevant look into how history repeats itself, and often exponentially.
Just this morning, I reached the point in Heather Ann Thompson’s “Fear and Fury” where the New York Crime Victims Board denied Darrell Cabey compensation for the paralysis and brain injury he suffered bc Bernie Goetz shot him. Same reasoning.
ummmm...what?
The most salient fact of the Bernie Goetz case is that he gave a voluntary confession to New Hampshire and NYC police in which he admitted that he didn’t think any of the young men he shot were armed or trying to rob him

Heather Ann Thompson knows of what she skeets: if you missed her book on the riots at Attica State Prison, there's still time to mend your ways.
Pay attention @nytimes.com @cnn.com
I'm in the last few pages of Michael Wehunt's Nightjars (got an ARC), then it's time for:
Fascinating tidbit in @historianheather.bsky.social's excellent FEAR AND FURY: you will be SHOCKED by the politician who previously insisted on putting armed thugs at polling places to prevent "fraud" (you will not be shocked)

Bannon told attendees that “we need to be at every precinct,” & said whether “you’re armed or not, that depends upon what your state laws are.” He also said “ICE has to be there & has to be there to back you up.”
I'm reading this now and YES it's catnip for me but nevertheless, absolute fire
Check out my first attempt at writing a book review! And also check out the book by @historianheather.bsky.social because it’s the best history book I’ve ever read. substack.com/@yourethegoo...
