My two earliest memories are both from TV: the wax impression of the hand of a ghost child after a seance from the movie Daughter of the Mind and the famous footage of a helicopter being pushed off the deck of an aircraft carrier as Saigon fell. These two images have stayed with me my entire life.

This is why browsing (ideally used) book and record stores felt so good: you stood a chance of finding something weird that none of your friends knew about. You had a secret treasure. Maybe it was some tape that had sold 3000 copies, maybe it was a sci-fi novel that had been out of print since 1972.

It's usually hard work for me, so when I have a good sentence pop into my head unbidden I consider myself lucky. Be in the lookout for it in this one short story I'm hoping to get cleaned up enough to submit this summer.

When I was about 10 or 11, my grandmother's house got burglarized. We called the cops, they shuffled around for a few minutes and started to leave. They laughed at me when I asked, incredulously, why they weren't taking any fingerprints. So that's my formative cop experience.

I grew up two towns over from the Belchertown State School, and just like with the roughly concurrent Catholic Church child sexual abuse situation, you'd hear stories that were so terrible you wouldn't let yourself think about them.
