"what are videogames even for?" is an interesting question to me. i think ideally i want them to have a similar richness to spending time with another person, (even if, maybe especially if, they are single player) so i value being exposed to a person's ideas and idiosyncracies through a game

kinda wish we'd circle back to the "what are videogames even for?" argument more these days because... passive stimulation delaying people's existential dread and increasing their screen time is not a particularly great argument for a thing to exist in my book. not to mention a really depressing one

I have to give respect to Void Stranger because it is at least trying for the type of higher-goal synthesis that I am always looking for in games but also the music is so head and shoulders above everything else in it it's not even funny

In retrospect TGM2 has changed my opinion on games a lot. I spent a lot of time in thoughtless grinding, and it was satisfying to improve, but at the end of the day I haven't gotten much out of it. If I spent that time developing an actual skill or even just improving at a multiplayer game...
