15 people in Minneapolis were indicted for “conspiracy to impede or injure a federal officer.” The prosecutor couldn’t name a single instance in which they actually injured anyone, but insisted that didn’t matter.
"My own mental health journey has given me a much deeper sense of empathy,” @francescahongwi.bsky.social told me. I wrote about the ridiculous attacks by right-wing media on Francesca Hong's mental health history for @motherjones.com. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

One of the great People’s Scholars, and writer of the definitive book on the Young Lords. Her class on race and empire (offered for free with a radical bookstore) introduced me to thinkers who changed how I saw the world. What a devastating loss
"Dr. Johanna Fernández, the Dominican American historian, prison abolitionist, and movement scholar, died on July 30, 2026, after a years-long struggle with non-small cell lung cancer. She was 55."
“It became very clearly obvious to me that this is a totally cross-partisan rebellion that’s happening from the bottom up,” @wewill2026.bsky.social told @hurwitz.bsky.social, after watching "MAGA Republicans and true-blue Democrats" protesting a Mich data center. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

The Costly Cruelty of the Kansas Anti-Trans Driver’s License Law
A state legislature mired in animus against transgender Kansans has succeeded in its inhumane goals, leaving those affected in a state of confusion and anxiety.

July 22 a list of 59 ICE and CBP agents charged with sexual & violent crimes between 2007-2026 was released 50 were sex crimes, many against children & the problem is getting worse: “Cases documented in 2025 and 2026 alone account for 42.4% of the list" ✏️ @hurwitz.bsky.social @motherjones.com
Report: Dozens of ICE and CBP agents have abused women and children
David Brouillette, according to Ohio Immigrant Alliance, is no outlier.

The officer who killed a young father in Maine had been accused of abuse by two ex-wives. He was also eligible to skip weeks of training in Georgia.

A man with a troubled history, including many accusations of violence, kills a young father in broad daylight. With one set of characters, this is a crime story that enrages law-and-order advocates. With another, it's our tax dollars at work. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
"The federal immigration policing force now includes about 50,000 agents spanning ICE, CBP, and other law enforcement agencies. And after ICE’s internal watchdog office was gutted, they’re operating with few guardrails and near-unlimited resources." @hurwitz.bsky.social
“ICE and Border Patrol agents have a disturbing track record of sexually and violently abusing women and children, including members of their own families. These are not people who should be given guns and free rein to roam U.S. communities.”
"H.R. 7661, which activists are calling a 'nationwide book ban bill,' has advanced out of committee." "The bill would prohibit public school libraries from stocking texts that involve 'sexually oriented material,' as well as 'gender dysphoria or transgenderism.'" #USA #Art #Censorship #Education
The 'nationwide book ban bill' follows a familiar playbook
The bill would restrict students from reading about queer and trans people.

Kalshi Wants You to Bet on How Many People ICE Abducts Today
A CFTC filing obtained by Migrant Insider shows the exchange quietly built a market that lets traders wager on ICE's daily arrest count with three confidential appendices the public never saw.

It also reflects my general impression from reporting -- that a lot of people who joined ICE during the "hiring surge" had long wanted to be in federal law enforcement and had done other violence-work jobs in the past (but wanted the cache of a street agent).

Before ICE hired David Brouillette, he'd been working in real estate with so little success that a judge called him "voluntarily underemployed." Before that, he was allegedly fired as a *volunteer* firefighter for threatening to punch his boss in the face.
1/ Had ICE done even a tiny bit of background checking, they never would have* hired the agent who gunned down a young dad in front of his 3 yo. A deep, deep dive from @nlanard.bsky.social @samanthamichaels.bsky.social @hurwitz.bsky.social *should have www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

2/ It's not just ex wives who have damming things to say about him. It's his ex coworkers, relatives, bosses, acquaintances:
You know the ICE officer who killed someone in Maine and was then accused by two ex-wives of abuse? Turns out he was likely eligible to skip a significant portion of training after ICE hired him, due to a policy change under this administration. www.motherjones.com/politics/202...
