Why I’m a fan of the Oxford comma.
It’s not that this hard first year is some kind of hazing ritual. It’s just the inherent stress of moving and a new job, compounded by a sudden uptick in multitasking and exercising budgeting and personnel management skills and teaching skills that aren’t as central to grad and postdoc time.
I often give similar advice to my former postdocs / students as they begin faculty jobs: the first year or two are really really hard. It gets much better and is worth it. The successful senior faculty had shitty first years too.

I know a lot of Drosophila flies. Outside the Hawaiian clade, D. prolongata is by far the coolest.

Interesting, the wing marks and leg hairs are strikingly similar to the picture wing group of Hawaiian Drosophila. It would be interesting to look at switches from genitalia-specific mating systems to courtship-specific across the group.
