The Rod Liddle biography suggests a certain post-1968 'type' who was just idiotically drawn to norm-breaching, moving via adolescent rebellion, punk, revolutionary socialism, and eventually ending up at racism, because by the 21st century that was the most efficient transgression still on offer

There's an Alexei Sayle joke about a fellow comic advising he make himself more contemporary by replacing the various dated celebrities in old routines with modern figures, and it culminates in him bellowing "bloody Dizzie Rascal, SINKING THE BELGRANO!" And it's lodged in my head ahead of tonight.

Hugely sad. We've lost John Blanche. It's hard to know where to begin. He set fire to a generation's imagination, and those fires show no sign of stopping burning. His work very much illuminated the darkness.
