Today is the birthday of cartoonist Jackie Ormes (Aug. 1, 1911-Dec. 26, 1985), the first Black woman to create a newspaper comic strip that was read nationally in the US. She created Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem, Torchy in Heartbeats & Patty-Jo ‘n’ Ginger. Patty Jo became a toy doll.

more from this convo: i also suggested making Ursa a sort of therapist character with an inhuman streak, to hit that perfect balance between "cannibal monster" and "hot mommy who will listen to your problems". so, like, Dyke Hannibal, i guess. a little derivative, but fun!

sketch of a therapist wearing a bear mask with empty eyes. vox: HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN HAVING THESE "SELF-DESTRUCTIVE URGES"? DO YOU THINK OF YOURSELF AS A GOOD PERSON, OR A BAD PERSON? ...INTERESTING. BECAUSE OF THE URGES, OR IN SPITE OF THEM? ....WHOOPS. CAN I HAVE THAT THUMB, ACTUALLY? I SKIPPED LUNCH FOR THIS.another sketch of the therapist with her mask off. her face is blurry, but you can just make out the vague suggestions of facial features warped far off from where a normal person's would be.

FURTHER CONCEPT ART, this time for Ursa, our delightful fucked up arm girl! First sketches (pic 1) from @irisjaycomics.bsky.social who tried a BUNCH of different angles on the character, which @mollamba.bsky.social then refined (pic 2, 3) into the horrifying flesh tube we know and love!

this essay by @magsvisaggio.com hit me, personally, like a damn truck. The queer villain kayfabe is fun, but I gotta wonder: how much of myself would be different now if I hadn’t spent my adult life growing in a noxious global environment? who would I have been in a world that didn’t want us dead?

Magdalene Visaggio was once in seminary, training to become a Catholic priest. Now she's a snarky online trans girl like the rest of us. In a challenging new essay for Assigned, she writes about the toll being hated for who she is has taken on her psyche. assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...

Amnesty International put out a major report documenting the influence of UK based anti trans gender critical organizations and their funding. Within hours, GC groups threatened defamation lawsuits and Amnesty was forced to pull it down. Proving the point they're anti rights. Anyways, here it is.
