Beard's essay opens, "I want to start very near the beginning of the tradition of Western literature, and its first recorded example of a man telling a woman to ‘shut up’; telling her that her voice was not to be heard in public." My essay on the Odyssey, Andrew & Tristan Tate, misogyny then & now:

Listening to Cassandra: Misogyny, Classical and Modern

Last weekend, the film The Odyssey was released and the Tate brothers were arrested in Florida at the behest of the British government, which seeks to extradite them to face a long list of charges. An...

Just saw the film version of The Lychee Road, and loved it. I like to think it’s dedicated to all the earnest public servants out there trying to keep the world turning. Like Kazuo Ishiguro’s Remains of the Day, it’s a warning to think carefully about who and what you serve.

Poster for The Lychee Road shows a bunch of Tang-era officials bouncing off a giant lychee.

Historical fantasy author Ma Boyong's bestseller, The Lychee Road, told from the view point of a petty official in the 8th century, who must get 'exotic' lychees from the newly acquired southern territories (my home region) all the way to the emperor in Chang'an in the north, still fresh. 1/

There is a lot to say about the Nolan Odyssey movie. But one point that I think has not been emphasized enough is: this is a film about living in LA, as Nolan, my erstwhile British compatriot and age mate, has done for years. I gather it’s a strange place.

If Nolan wrote for me, his film would tank. But did I detect subtle nods to the feminist retellings I love? Penelope is a dexterous player dealt a terrible hand. Even Agamemnon understands why Clytemnestra killed him. Circe’s point on male appetites stands. Helen is a pretext, and sorry for it.

"These old fellows Have their ingratitude in them hereditary: Their blood is caked, 'tis cold, it seldom flows; 'Tis lack of kindly warmth they are not kind; And nature, as it grows again toward earth, Is fashion'd for the journey, dull and heavy." - Timon, 2.2. #ShakespeareSunday

Winnie and Pooh, walking together. Text reads:

"Is he dead yet?" asked Piglet.
"No," said Pooh.
"Fuck," said Piglet.

“..would you be pleased To find a nation of such barbarous temper, That, breaking out in hideous violence, Would not afford you an abode on earth..what would you think To be thus used? This is the strangers’ case; And this your mountainish inhumanity.” #ShakespeareSunday
