"Today is August 4, 2026" There Will Come Soft Rains By: Ray Bradbury
after driving hundreds of miles it's nice to get a hello and welcome from the sky I hope everybody got a bit of the rain.
Very excited to finally see Die Fledermaus 🎶 at @operahollandpark.bsky.social As featured in the Beatles film A HardDay’s Night. 🎬 And thinking of @isabelrogers.bsky.social’s Mum, who was in the scene & shared such a lovely insights about the shoot for my book.📕
I've just bought one of those newfangled lottery tickets on a whim because it promised me nearly £400 million to be paid out over 30 years. My endlessly updating Fantasy List Of People I Will Give Money To When I Win will have to have an embedded rolling tranche programme. Who gets what when?
I'm beginning to think the builders aren't turning up today.
Not even ten past three and Zig has started his Supper Stare. Je can't
Maybe, just maybe, Death found Rod Liddle by feeling down behind the sofa cushion in search of mislaid things. We can only hope Death will now decide to do a proper clean up, take those cushions out completely, and see what other shit is trying to hide there.
This thread should be required reading for Michiganders, and will absolutely delight you no matter where you're from. Kathryn's grandmother is an all-timer.
I have just been sent the transcript of a deposition my grandmother gave in 1977 while she was serving as an expert witness in a series of tribal rights cases and let me tell you, if nothing else this is proof that I come by it honest for every conceivable value of “it”
Generation after generation, the kids're alright. Dogs. Crows. Ink. Coffee. How quickly the body adds muscle when we use it. Words and how the recombine. Every day brings a chance to protect someone. Lemons.
Tell me a few things you love about being alive. Before you answer, meditate seriously on the alternative and consider what you would miss. Then switch to being glad you have it, and tell me all about it. Don't be shy, seriously. I want to hear.
Yesterday I spotted a car by my skip. Drove off minutes later. Today I see there are two huge pizza boxes in the skip. Has someone really driven two fields off a lane to chuck a couple of pizza boxes in someone else's skip? Unless the paperbacks had spy code in, and the pizza boxes are now VITAL
I'm going away in a couple of days and have 2 long lists to work through - 1 packing and 1 things I must do before I go. So efficient. So tired. What have I forgotten for tomorrow's supermarket delivery to pre-load the post-trip return? NOTHING PERISHABLE THAT I WON'T EAT BY MONDAY
A photo of UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin, or as I like to call it FIFA foe thumb
Someone left a bag of paperbacks in my parcel box yesterday. No idea who or why. No note. Apart from the whole living-in-one-room-with-no-space thing, the first one I saw was a Richard Osman. Left them there in case whoever it was has second and better thoughts. wtaf? (am I being churlish?) (no)
I have been waiting all summer for Erik to bring us his annual TOMATO SANDWICHES thread. This is nothing short of pure joy. Read and delight in it.
(In honor of August, bringing this 🧵 over from twitter) August makes me think of the best summer restaurant I ever ate at. It didn’t have a name, just a tidy hand-painted sign: “Tomato Sandwiches—all you can eat.” #tomatosandwiches
People who have seen The Bear right through to the end: do I press on after half an ep of S5 last night when I didn't want it to droop like I fear it drooped in its middle? Is my adoration of the earlier eps going to pay off? I wear suits now.
see - I immediately thought it was somebody's upside down groovy shoe soles after they had fallen head first into a swamp and it would be a Bog Person all over again this is why I am not an archaeologist

Enjoying all the advice I'm getting since my poet's Things Are Like Other Things observation this morning. So much advice. That'll teach me not to be wall-to-wall whimsy.
Visiting my mother next week. Her usual greeting is "your hair is awfully short - I prefer it longer" so I have deliberately been lengthening it. Today on the phone she asked if I have any red left at all, or if it was totally grey. I can sense there is no winning to be had here.
Current vehicle's handbook lists 3 diff possible tyres, with sub-variations, each needing diff pressures, so I've had to go back and work out from first principles exactly which tyres I have so I don't either explode them or run them floppy. Done this multiple times over years. Cannot retain answer
Can't be the first to say this, but (and yay UEFA - brilliant) this works equally well if you swap out "football" for maybe "water" or "a stable climate". Look at me being the revolutionary socialist. "No one has the moral authority to sell what they merely hold in trust for the next generation."
I sent this to my daughter and her girlfriend. Actually I sent it to the family chat with the comment "Lesbians ❤️" The best.
can't stop laughing😭
I want to hug my cottage and tell it everything will be fine. Or put googly eyes in the windows and a smile on the fireplace.
Can confirm Also last week I yelled “COOL PANTS” at a guy across the street wearing cool pants but because I yelled in the voice of a Viking-descended cishet man I’m pretty sure he thought I was mad at him
Last week a stranger on my block said “hey man, nice OUTFIT” and I messaged two friends immediately, told a barista and a cashier, and basically rode that high all afternoon I don’t have a lot of clothing stories but compliment my cargo bike and you are in for a CONVERSATION
This and the replies are just lovely.
The other day at the grocery store I told a woman I loved her cute green shoes, which matched her cute green top, and her whole face lit up and she told me the story of how she bought them Giving another woman a compliment is a great way to get a little serotonin boost btw
If your vote is undecided in the Clacton by-election this might be the clincher for you
My builder is late for our 3 o'clock meeting THAT WE CONFIRMED AT LUNCHTIME. I've now made a cup of tea and am contemplating, well, all sorts of things. Because of course I can't get on with anything else.
Saw this on today's dogwalk. Either it has been munched or I've discovered a map of the universe. Perhaps I'm now a god?
