Luna and I spent a long time talking about this decision, and I fully understand and support her in this choice to resign. I am saddened that the lack of movement within the DFL has meant that we are losing a fierce trans woman's voice within our party. It fucking sucks.

Today, I resigned all my DFL positions. I can no longer in good conscience support Amy Klobuchar for Governor, due to her votes for bills restricting trans healthcare and trans rights, and due to her making no effort to apologize for or atone for that. I can't go into Pride weekend supporting her.

Richard, Brian, and Michael,

I am writing to inform you of my decision to resign all my DFL posts (including Director in Stonewall DFL and Central Committee Member in SD62), effective immediately. This is not a decision I make lightly, but it felt like the only moral path forward for me.

Over the past year or two, I’ve spent a lot of my time and energy specifically on making the DFL better for trans people, especially trans women. It’s been a hard road, especially as more and more people kept saying and doing transphobic things within the party, as I wrote about here a couple months ago. I feel like in that time I have made some progress! There are more trans people in leadership roles within the party than there were previously, my trainings on how to talk about trans people have been successful, and I feel I’ve done my part to help continue mobilizing a real movement for trans rights both in the party and in the way elected DFL officials use their power. I’m grateful for the allyship many (including the three of you) have shown in these efforts.

But I can no longer in good conscience support Amy Klobuchar for Governor, and I cannot bring myself to stay silent about the ways in which she’s failed the trans community in the past and in which she may continue to harm us as Governor.

But I can no longer in good conscience support Amy Klobuchar for Governor, and I cannot bring myself to stay silent about the ways in which she’s failed the trans community in the past and in which she may continue to harm us as Governor. On December 18, 2024, Senator Amy Klobuchar voted to pass 2025’s National Defense Authorization Act, which banned TRICARE (health insurance for military servicemembers and their families) from covering trans healthcare for minors. Moreover, on October 9, 2025, Senator Klobuchar voted to pass the next year’s NDAA, which banned trans healthcare coverage for all TRICARE members, banned trans women from women’s sports at military academies, and banned trans people from using appropriate restrooms and locker rooms at all military installations. Senator Klobuchar’s complicity in blocking coverage for live-saving healthcare and in instituting discriminatory and bigoted policies in the Department of Defense is unconscionable. These are two of the first anti-2SLGBTQIA+ bills to pass Congress in decades, and Klobuchar voted for both of them.

Since then, Klobuchar has done nothing to apologize or to make amends with the trans community. She has not stood in solidarity with us as we continue to be attacked from all sides. She has not stated whether she will defend the current protections for trans people that the MN legislature passed into law under the leadership of Melissa Hortman and Kari Dziedzic. Despite many people expressing concerns about this to her campaign, there has been no expression of support for the trans community, and no efforts to earn our votes.

I cannot bring myself to stand by and allow her to be coronated as the DFL nominee for Governor when it risks the lives and well-being of myself and my trans neighbors across this state. I can't go into Pride weekend granting her campaign tacit support. Unless she changes her approach, dramatically and soon, I must urge everyone to vote against her in the primary. It is for this reason that I humbly resign from my posts, rather than force the party to remove me for malfeasance.

Sincerely and regretfully,

Luna Brekke (she/her)

My day job is at a rural branch of a public library, and we have a Pride display. Yesterday I was at the desk when a man came in. Fifties, maybe, or sixties. Plaid shirt, mesh trucker cap, suspenders. He went up to the display and just stood there for a long moment. Then he came up to the desk. 🧵 1/
