My first question is: If McMaster is exempt, and the two currently proposed centres are their projects, then why the need to vote against the 1 year moratorium which would have allowed the city time to consider the impacts of other, perhaps less research oriented, centres? #HamOnt

City of Hamilton City Solicitor: The City of Hamilton *CANNOT* stop McMaster University from building its 44 Frid Street data centre. It is an "undertaking" of the University. As per Section 62.0.2 of the Planning Act, the City cannot apply an Interim Control Bylaw against McMaster. #yhmcc #HamOnt

"But we'll get sued" OK I dunno like maybe have the bare minimum of spine and call their bluff, how about that? Instead you pulled out ALL the stops to try to create this weak af justification. We see you. #HamOnt

I'm so mad with my local #HamOnt mayor & ward councilor. On a day where the sky is orange & smoke is everywhere, they voted to NOT force a pause on the building of data centers here. I'm just... no words 🤬

Our city would gain reputation worldwide as the medium-sized municipality that brought talks of regulation to the unfettered capitalism currently crushing our collective will to live. And instead we're just too scared of being sued!

I thought about this again and could even imagine how amazing it would be if Hamilton was at the forefront of a lawsuit preventing large datacentres? We'd have so much interest in the city as avant-garde protectors of humanity.

The fact Councillors cannot ask invited presenters questions about projects they are proponents of, but the presenters are allowed to provide any general information they see fit, is an alarming precedent being set at #HamOnt Council today.
