It isn’t just that current systems force artists to play the lottery to make a living, it’s that playing that lottery—constantly subbing work, applying to grants, applying to fellowships, etc—is itself a full-time job. The more you play, the more you win 🙃

This is me at 17 winning first place in a state persuasive speaking contest. I talked about censorship of the state, the press, and the student. I modeled the structure of my 10-min speech after John Oliver monologues which I’ve watched every week since I was 15. I hope she’s proud of future her.
