We're a culture without capacity to process even the "regular" grief of living, and with the technological capacity and vast interconnection to cause grief and moral injury on a scale that would be hard to process even *if* we had the social/emotional/spiritual tools for it

The moral injury of the period, the grief from not just the too and so many deaths but the kinds of lives we had before, the laying bare of disposability, the non covid deaths it sped, the institutional strain, the collective fear and distrust, the prioritization of work anyway
A lot of the "rural voters" that we worry about are, in fact, recent transplants & white-flighters. They're urbanites who are bringing their day job $$ with them. They have VERY different concerns than people who actually grew up rural & have to deal w rural opportunities.
A very serious Rural Politico once told me "Dems have to go to farmer meetings! We gotta be where the people are!" I was in fact in a farmer meeting at that very moment! So I live-texted him the meeting. They were complaining that they want indentured workers that they don't have to pay or feed.

But folks aren't despite the fact that our system does give disproportionate power to rural areas. But instead of taking that as the rules of the game as it exists, and actually organizing, we complain about it.

100 years ago my grandparents are either children (maybe working at 10 and 11), or they're a few years off from being born. If we do 75 years instead, then we've got 1 who knows, 1 working in a nut canning factory, 1 probably still working around the coal mine, 1 who I imagine was mostly pregnant

One of the failures of a lot of ethical/moral discourse, as I see it, is that we have a really hard time accounting for that sometimes being an asshole is fun. If you can't talk about that using power and/or causing suffering might *feel good* then you can't get to what's really going on
