Werden Waldbrände früh genug entdeckt, lassen sich die Schäden meist begrenzen. Unter anderem mit luft- und satellitengestützter Früherkennung arbeitet das DLR an innovativen, modernen und robusten Methoden und Tools, um Einsatzkräfte in ihrem Kampf gegen die Flammen mit aktuellen Informationen zu versorgen. Auf der Grundlage verlässlicher Daten können sie so schnell die richtigen Entscheidungen treffen.

Wenn man dem Satellitenbild ein Bild im Infrarotspektrum überlagert, kann man (hellrot) auch diejenigen Feuer erkennen, die nur wenig Rauch erzeugen.

Das "ZKI Fire Monitoring System" des DLR liefert aktuelle Waldbrandinformationen für Europa der letzten 31 Tage. Mit dem Ziel, verbrannte Flächen und deren räumliche Entwicklung nahezu in Echtzeit zu überwachen, wurde ein vollautomatisierter Ansatz entwickelt (Nolde et al. 2020, Link zur Publikation https://doi.org/10.3390/rs1213216 2) und in einer operativen Verarbeitungskette umgesetzt. Um mehrere Aktualisierungen pro Tag zu erreichen, werden Satellitendaten mittlerer Auflösung verwendet. Das Informationssystem ermöglicht eine interaktive Analyse aktueller Waldbrände in jedem von einem Benutzer definierten Interessengebiet.

Die täglichen Produkte zeigen die Grenzen der verbrannten Gebiete, Minuten nachdem Satellitenbilder verfügbar sind. Für MODIS erfolgt der Datenempfang über die DLR-Bodenstationen in Neustrelitz und Oberpfaffenhofen (Deutschland) mittels Direktübertragung bei jeder Satellitenüberführung. Für Copernicus Sentinel-3-Daten stützen wir uns auf den Datenverteilungsmechanismus des Sentinel Open Access Hub der Europäischen Weltraumorganisation und das Copernicus Data Integration and Analysis System (DIAS).

Die Produkte der verbrannten Fläche werden iterativ und automatisch über einen Zeitraum von 10 Tagen aktualisiert, sobald neue Satellitendaten verfügbar sind. Dies ermöglicht eine kontinuierliche Verbesserung der abgeleiteten Brandperimeter, indem der Einfluss von Störfaktoren wie Wolkenbedeckung, Rauchfahnen und Schatten minimiert wird.

Neben dem Brandflächenumfang fließen weitere Attribute wie die Brandschwere, die betroffene Fläche sowie die genauen Erkennungszeiten in die Daten ein. Es ist daher möglich, die Entwicklung jedes verbrannten Bereichs in Raum und Zeit zu verfolgen.

Das DLR verknüpft Technologien aus Raumfahrt, Luftfahrt, KI und Sicherheit zu den verschiedensten Aspekten einer modernen Waldbrandüberwachung – von der globalen Detektion über Drohnenschwärme bis zur Echtzeitunterstützung mit Daten und Karten aus dem All für eine effektive, effiziente und sichere taktische Einsatzplanung vor Ort.

Confirmation bias makes AI-dreams even more dangerous. I asked a question about the prevalence of a health issue in a strain of mice. Google AI gave an answer: 1-4% and 3 references. Looked good but I checked the references. 1-4% - NOT in any of them. And I almost did not check! Sheesh....

Our flight from Seattle to Sacramento was delayed by a few hours last night, but we were rewarded with an epic sunset on Tahoma (Rainier) as it poked through the low stratus layer. The pastel peach backdrop was made possible by the horrific wildfire smoke from all the PNW fires.

Image of The Elephant's Trunk Nebula (IC 1396A) is a concentration of interstellar gas and dust within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light years away from Earth.[1] The nebula is a dark, dense globule that gets its name from its appearance at visible light wavelengths, where there is a dark patch with a bright, sinuous rim. The bright rim is the surface of the dense cloud that is being illuminated and ionized by a very bright, massive multiple star (HD 206267) that is just to the east of the Elephant's Trunk Nebula . The entire IC 1396 region is ionized by the massive star, except for dense globules that can protect themselves from the star's harsh ultraviolet rays.

This Nebula, a supernova remnant, is located in the constellation of Cygnus (The Swan).

I processed the nebula in SHO, the Hubble palette. In the end, I experimented a bit with the colors, and that resulted in this electric look.

The following software was used:
Astro Pixel Processor (stacking); PixInsight (processing), and I did the final touches in Affinity V3.

Telescope: Officina Stellare ProRC 700 (70cm/27.5 inches) F8 - RC design reflector telescope

Location: Oria, Spain => Bortle Class 1

Total exposure time: 7 hours.
