The Fossil Files: A new head banging dinosaur
A newly discovered fossil from the Cretaceous of Mongolia tells us an interesting story about the purported head butting behaviour of dinosaurs. Pachycephalosaurs are famous for their thick domed heads but it has been disputed how or when this evolved. The beautifully preserved Zavacephale rinpoche has a well preserved skull and dome but also loads of details of the body and tail as well. What is suprising is that this individual is much smaller, and occurs much earlier, than other pachycephalosaurs. We take a look at this new fossil and what this means for interpreting the evolution of dinosaur behaviour. This week's paper is "A domed pachycephalosaur from the early Cretaceous of Mongolia" by Tsogtbaatar Chinzorig and colleagues from Mongolia and North Carolina, published in Nature in September 2025. Nikola has done an amazing job and made some awesome renditions of it, including some showing speculative burrowing behaviours!

So this years palaeo pumpkin ended up being a homage to one of my favourite places in the World, the incredible @cpdinosaurs.bsky.social ! I decided to go for a breaching CPD Icthyosaur with the sclerotic rings in the classic pineapple ring style.
When humans look at something we find beautiful our brains release dopamine, lifting mood & if we connect with what we're looking at oxytocin, giving us a sense of belonging. A tiny posy I made in a thimble, with real flowers I grew👇 If you like it it'll alter your brain biochemistry for the better:
One of the best things I made this year for sentiment and passion alone, a gift to an incredible young Palaeo enthusiast and her wonderful family who I got to surprise with this at Lyme Regis. I like working with marine scenes, and I’m really happy they liked it ☺️
Another absolutely spectacular entry in David James Armsby’s incredible “Dinosauria” short film series. This might mark the first time Scutellosaurus has a prominent role in a work of dinosaur media, and it makes for a very memorable debut.

For this #FossilFriday, it's unsurprisingly Spinosaurus as I gear up to the publication of my new book with @markwitton.bsky.social on this most controversial of dinosaurs and the other spinosaurs. It's out in just a couple of weeks (in the UK, Jan 2026 elsewhere).
Apparently some people find me very intimidating, hiding behind pillars or fleeing desperately at the merest hint of my presence. Perhaps it’s the ready smile and piratical beard? So err probably a 6?

From Donald Gluts 1982 edition of the Dinosaur dictionary, feathered Dinosaurs from 1976 from the legendary William Stout, and Mark Hallet also producing a fully feathered Theropod. This book was embracing the idea of with footprints, Archaeopteryx and in some of its wonderful artwork

I wonder if it'd be of use (or anyone would be interested in chipping in) to do a discussion on hardships of finding postdoctoral or permanent employment in palaeo (and how these hardships are accentuated in disadvnataged groups) 🤔

Painted 142 (I think) prehistoric animals this year, including these Tyrannosauroids for @neilgostling.bsky.social and his wonderful Hidden In Stone Exhibition. These formed a display based on teeth and revealed a diverse Theropod assemblage that was fun to recreate ☺️ peerj.com/articles/154...
