This thread illustrates the weird scam landscape authors are dealing with. Since AI was illegally trained on our stolen work, it's distinctly surreal to have elaborate scams use our plagiarized words against us...and it's getting more advanced at mimicking legitimacy.
The book club scam has taken an exciting new leap forward. I got one today from a "curated literary platform and newsletter" that, unusually, offered a link to its website. I'm in edits, so obviously I took the opportunity to procrastinate. /1
New writers often get frustrated when agents or editors can't define "voice" sufficiently for them to understand. Voice is very "you know it when you see it" and seeing it often comes from having seen so much that you know when something feels distinct. LLMs produce the opposite of voice by design.

Really interesting thread 🧵 on how a class structured their AI policies when given rein to make informed choices.
Last term I tried an experiment: I walked into my Tech and Design Ethics class, admitted that I had *no idea* what to do about ChatGPT - so I would let them figure it out. As in: their first project was to decide and write the ChatGPT policy for the class. Here's what happened:
"I can't afford to support my favorite author right now, I—" Reviews. Reviews are free AND they are a gift to authors that can keep on giving (i.e., exposure, marketing, algo boosts, etc.) Please, give the gift of reviews to your authors this holiday season. It really can make a difference!
Merry Christmas! I know this can be a difficult time for many, so I hope everyone has the best day they can. ❤️🎄🎁 Here, have a virtual cookie! (We have a marathon baking session every year, and this year we made about 875 cookies. 😁)

This whole thread, and what it means for real writing vs AI. 👇❤️
I am not aware of a single author who has a shortage of book ideas. Words, yes. Ways to make the ideas become a book, yes. But I've never met an author who doesn't have ideas just raining down all the damn time.
100% this. If you can't find joy in the act of writing, and feel euphoria after editing several drafts into exactly what your thoughts had in mind (or close to it), then I really suggest you don't become a writer. The idea, the thoughts, are nothing without execution. The work is the thing.
Sometimes I wonder if our many years of jokes about writers hating writing and doing anything but writing, etc, have convinced people that the writing part is the hurdle and the goal is just to have a thing in hand. But I am here to tell you: the writing is the best part. The act is the thing.
Halloween weather was perfect here, and it was a Friday night, so we got... *drum roll* 1500 kids -- not a typo 😆 We ran out of candy despite spending a lot. Only neighbor I saw that *didn't* run out had bought 17 Costco bags of candy. 17!
Just had to explain to our vet that "No, Sugar can't come in for teeth cleaning surgery next Friday because Halloween is her favorite holiday." 🤷♀️ Yes, our dog has a favorite holiday. This formerly abandoned dog loves all the pets and attention from the trick-or-treating kids (and their parents). 😍
Yay me! I got my Covid (and flu) shot today at Costco, and I rewarded myself with their new Chocolate Caramel Brownie sundae. 😆😋

Even though I don't post much on any social media right now, I do lurk-read. And Bree is one of my favorite follows because she's never lost sight of the *social* aspect of social media. This thread summarizes what keeps me here even on my bad days. 👇😍
the thing that always baffles me about the bubblesky™️ discourse is that it just makes me feel so sad for the kind of person who has only ever seen social media as a place you must extract tangible value from--political clout, or clicks for your hot takes, or idek what they're doing. I like people.
