Events like the World Cup & the Olympic and Paralympic Games produce (a) short-term boosts in hospitality, construction & other industries of host cities & (b) decreases in other economic activity that partially offsets the gains. Broader job trends, not the World Cup, drove most of the US economy.

"The World Cup was expected to be a boon for leisure & hospitality as fans filled sports bars across the country & hotels in host cities. However, in June & July, leisure & hospitality shed 43,000 jobs & 40,000 jobs, respectively, Bureau of Labor Statistics data shows." www.cnn.com/2026/08/07/e...

screenshot of CNN that features job data showing that "World Cup job bust" whereby retail lost 19,400 jobs and leisure hospitality loss 40,000 jobs. Beneath that you can see it reads "bleak report: Jobs report shows sharp slowdown in summer hiring."

California policy works to preserve universal meal access but nationwide, there are big challenges for school meals. Republicans should be expected to disavow Trumpist policy excess leading to this nonsense.

Fewer U.S. children may have access to free school meals this academic year amid changes ushered in by the Republicans' tax-and-spending law, the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act," according to food and public policy experts.

Update: We now have data from 22 states showing how many fewer kids are receiving SNAP in the wake of deep cuts enacted last year. In just those 22 states, 1.1 million fewer kids are receiving SNAP. Nationwide, that number likely exceeds 1.5 million kids. www.cbpp.org/research/foo...

SNAP Tracker: People Are Losing Food Assistance as the Harmful 2025 Republican Reconciliation Law Is Implemented

SNAP participation nationwide fell by more than 4.5 million people (nearly 11 percent) between the law’s July 2025 enactment and April 2026, based on the latest month of data.

The latest @ecmwf.int seasonal forecast paints coastal California with >8 inches above normal precipitation from December–February. That would be about 170% of normal for San Francisco (~22 inches). This is just a computer prediction, but El Niño may have an outsized influence this winter. #CAwx

Between stuff like this and the party having stood by for the President's lawless, reckless attack on Iran, it's almost as if the idea that the GOP owns national security as an issue needs a _thorough_ reexamination.

Three years ago, EPA proposed cybersecurity rules for municipal water systems. Republicans sued to prevent the rules from going into effect, and that was the end of that. Now seven states' water systems are under attack by Iran.

Fantastic reporting here by Libby Rainey that confirms what we've been hearing about the "clean zones" around LA28 venues: "Carter Hewgley, chief strategy officer for L.A. County’s Department of Homeless Services and Housing, said his office had been told to plan for perimeters as wide as a mile"

The LA Olympics is expected to displace unhoused people living around venues. So what's the plan?

L.A. officials say people living on the streets will likely have to leave certain areas come 2028. They don't know how they'll be moved or who will pay for it.
