Is this a good time to mention that in college my History of Translation lecturer (Michael Cronin) told us that one of the first vernacular translations of The Illiad was into Irish, and the translator had to give the main characters dogs because in Gaelic society a free man had a dog

Nearly half of Greeks cannot afford a week’s holiday
Almost half of people in Greece cannot afford to take a one-week holiday, according to new Eurostat data. The Press Project 31 Ιουλίου 2026 | 18:59:19 Σχόλια Μοιράσου το __ * __Facebook * __Twitter * __LinkedIn * __Reddit In 2025, 46.6% of the population aged 16 and over were unable to afford a week’s holiday away from home, far above the EU average of 27.5%. Greece recorded the second-highest rate in the European Union, behind only Romania, where the figure stood at 61.4%. Bulgaria and Hungary followed, both at 39.1%. By contrast, the lowest rates were recorded in Luxembourg at 10.6%, Sweden at 12.4% and the Netherlands at 12.8%. Despite a slight decline compared with 2015, the proportion of people in Greece unable to afford a holiday remains extremely high, once again highlighting the sustained financial pressure on households and the failure of living standards to improve despite government claims. ______________________________________________ Are you seeking news from Greece presented from a progressive, non-mainstream perspective? **Subscribe monthly or annually** to support TPP International in delivering independent reporting in English. The horse op-ed is an instant classic. I can't tell you how much joy this piece gives me. It should be taught in every introductory writing class in no small part because the horse arguments are so compelling. "I have noticed that human children get to eat cake. But I am bigger than the children."

I would call the government clowns but they’d dislike that as that would imply they had done some performing arts training.
Performing and creative arts university courses will no longer receive funding from a government teaching grant as part of “difficult decisions” about spending priorities, Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson has said.

Maybe this hasn’t sunk in for anyone who should care but the NHS was birthed when the UK *literally had negative money*. The USA had razed us of every penny to pay for weapons to defend ourselves against Germany, Germany had bombed all our industrial sites. We still did it in 6 months. 6.
The NHS was founded 78 years ago today. It was built after the devastation of the Second World War when the country was bankrupt - but when the people demanded a society built on fairness and dignity for all. Today, we must defend the right to healthcare and rebuild our social security system.
