Our digital sphinx, a cautionary tale about the interpretation of connectome-body models, is now a reviewed preprint at @elife.bsky.social. We are grateful to the reviewers for engaging seriously with what we hope is a useful (if absurd) demonstration. elifesciences.org/reviewed-pre...

The digital sphinx: Can a worm brain control a fly body?

🧵 New preprint led by @bingbrunton.bsky.social, @elliottabe.bsky.social, @lawrencehu.bsky.social We gave a worm brain control of a fly body and it walked What did we learn? Nothing, other than deep reinforcement learning is effective We call it the digital sphinx www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

"The United States has a shortage of nonhuman primates that was exacerbated by, and has not recovered from, the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2023, a committee of the National Academies of Sciences ... examined the current and future needs for nonhuman primates in research."

The board of directors at Oregon Health & Science University has voted unanimously to develop a plan to scale down the university’s primate research center and pivot its focus to new approach methodologies. #neuroskyence By @callimcflurry.bsky.social www.thetransmitter.org/nonhuman-pri...

Happy to say our head-direction-cell-in-3D is finally out! doi.org/10.1038/s420... Confirms that the brain's compass uses a dual-axis rule (like an iphone does) to maintain a constant estimate of horizontal heading even when the head is not horizontal. Blogpost explanation here: shorturl.at/9VdGM

How the brain adapts its 2D compass for a 3D world

The brain’s neural compass seems 2D, detecting only left and right head-turns. However, if the head is tilted in 3D, its rotation around the vertical axis also covertly changes its horizontal facing ...

Job alert! We are seeking a rodent in vivo electrophysiologist to work on coordination between anterior thalamus and hippocampus in rats using Neuropixels. Beautiful Scotland, leading university (Glasgow) and vibrant intellectual setting. Post is 23 months but hopefully extensible. Details here 👇

Am I alone in finding the UK Home Office ASPEL form completely and utterly not fit for purpose? I could have run and published an entire experiment in the time it's taken me to get my licence application through the multiple rounds of editing required 😡

We tracked mice in space! This video shows our estimate of their self-induced centripetal force during circling in 3D 👩‍🚀 Preprint thread below 👇

1/ New preprint! 🧪With @talmo.bsky.social and team, we used deep learning on archival NASA video of mice on the ISS. Turns out mice in microgravity become tiny acrobats: huddling to sleep, doing backflips, even briefly generating their own ~1g. #SpaceBiology #OpenScience #NASA #SLEAP

Preprint alert! We've done the first ever wireless brain recordings from the high-level visual & motor regions (IT/PMv/PFC) in monkeys engaged in natural behaviors as well as during controlled screen-based tasks. Read below for a lay summary and the link for details! 1/8

On this day dedicated to animals in laboratories, I thank the animals that make it possible to advance science I pledge to work with them compassionately and responsibly ❤️ I also thank my lab and institute team who share my commitment to ethical science 🙏. I am proud of what we accomplish together

I created this collection of common brain models in neuroscience, all to scale Across species, brains share fundamental principles and many homologous regions But as size increases, complexity and connectivity change. We need the full spectrum, from flies to rodents, non-human primates, and humans

A scaled collection of brains from common neuroscience model organisms arranged side by side. From left to right: a large human brain and a smaller macaque brain on the top row; below them progressively smaller brains from a marmoset, rat, mouse, zebrafish, and a tiny Drosophila (fruit fly). A coin provides size reference. An inset shows a small, irregularly shaped brain organoid.

Nice! I presented a Bayesian poster in 2004… and now I do naturalistic wireless ephys and behavior to study navigation in rats and primates. Not too bad! 😁 It may look like Bayesian modeling and information theory peaked, but I think that they became the background, and are now simply assumed.

I tracked every keyword in 22 years of Cosyne abstracts to map how computational neuroscience evolved — from Bayesian brains to neural manifolds to LLMs — and where it's heading next.

Chapter 1 – Why do we feel dizzy when turning? This comes from how the inner ear’s rotation sensors (the semi-circular canals) work mechanically. The short videos below (and the next one) explain why. (And yes, that video is low-quality, but it's actually me on the chair 😅)

Hi BlueSky — I’m bringing over an old SciTwitter thread series exploring how beautifully the vestibular system works from a systems and computational neuroscience perspective. Chapter 1 coming shortly! I’ll keep all chapters threaded below.

“A sanctuary is not a strategy. It is capitulation to fear and to political pressure that ignores scientific reality,” said @vincentcostaphd.bsky.social, a neuroscientist at Emory University NPRC. “You are chasing the approval of a vocal minority, rather than chasing the future of medicine.”

Breaking news: One of the largest monkey research centers in the United States has taken the first steps toward converting itself into a primate sanctuary, a seismic change that would affect biomedical research across the country. https://scim.ag/4bH2COV
