Alison Barth on different neuron types’ roles in cortex
Barth uses learning tasks in mice to drive synaptic plasticity in the sensory cortex, hoping to unlock general principles of how the cortex works.

New Substack post! Another guest post from my brilliant PhD student Victoria Oldemburgo de Mello on the moralization of AI. Moralizing AI could be a reasonable position, she argues, but is it? Depends on what we know about AI and about how moralization works. She also calls my opinions dumb. Ouch!
Some Things Are Not Negotiable. Is AI One of Them?
Here is another guest post by my PhD student, Victória Oldemburgo de Mello.

📢PROJECT UPDATE📢 You may have seen the news that the University of Exeter, home of the wills project, has placed 500 academics at risk of redundancy. The project leader Prof. Jane Whittle & project co-investigator Dr Laura Sangha are both at risk, alongside almost all of the History department. 1/
During a lecture in 1985, Erdős said, "You don't have to believe in God, but you should believe in The Book." "The Book" was obviously AI 😁

Fwiw my best go at a simple p-value explanation is, "If nothing interesting is going on, how likely are we to see these data or something more extreme?" Then you have to define interesting and more extreme, but that's problem-specific.
I’m afraid this flips the statistical conditional — “given these data, how likely just chance?” — when the logic is closer to “given just chance, how likely these data?” Now how bad that is probably depends on the context and the extent to which it’s taken seriously in the first place 😅

Pyramidal cells in the cortex send a long apical dendrite to layer 1. What is its role? What happens when it's gone? ✂️ A causal spatial role for apical dendrites in the cortex Out today with @kenneth-harris.bsky.social, @carandinilab.net and @fedrossi.bsky.social www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
A causal spatial role for apical dendrites in the cortex
Cortical pyramidal neurons project a long apical dendrite to layer 1 (L1), to receive synaptic inputs that are thought to provide contextual and possibly suppressive modulation. In visual cortex, thes...
