I'm a professor at a Florida state college (2 yr). I applied for funding to attend the American Historical Association's annual conference. Denied. Florida state law bars colleges from paying for conferences deemed sympathetic to DEI. A Florida brain drain in the works? @historians.org

I’ve started a new YouTube channel that focuses on my mountain work. I did this because my old channel was a bit of a potpourri in terms of the topics I covered, and separating my mountains work will offer better clarity for me and for the platform’s algorithmic signals. www.youtube.com/@onmountains

The source of the flood in Nepal is a collapsed glacier 🧪⚒️
There has been a truly horrific flood in Nepal this morning (you can go search for videos). Let's be careful not to jump to conclusions about the trigger until we have visual confirmation. This is unlikely to have been a glacial lake outburst flood. 🧪⚒️
One tries not to add to the burden of climate angst but anyone who has been on a glacier knows that the scale of this is... unimaginable.
An incredibly well-timed Landsat 9 pass captured the effects of yesterday’s catastrophic glacier collapse near the Nepal–Tibet border. The event was so massive that it was detected by seismometers around the world.
We need more school administrators - especially at smaller, two-year schools whose students are less prepared than their peers at more selective institutions - to show some spine and start unplugging shit. Fewer screens and more books. While we are at it, smaller classes too. This is the way.
An exemplary policy at UChicago: - Technology ban in class. - Total AI ban. Students may not use it, instructors may not assign it. Exceptions to the latter for narrow purposes must be approved at the administrator level. - Instructors may not use AI for grading. chicagomaroon.com/53262/news/s...

Today is the Entrada Folklórica for Bolivia’s Festival of the Virgin of Urkupiña. This weekend is the mass and pilgrimage. Sad to miss it all this year. Here is a photo of me in a mine with my stone, which was confiscated by airport security on my way home.

Furious that Chris Nolan would disregard historical accuracy in adapting The Odyssey by making a "movie" with "cameras" instead of memorizing the entire story and then going on a nationwide tour to sing it to us while tripping on ergotized barley

@rsmythfreelance.bsky.social Morning! Do you have a gift link to your review of Ed's new book "Upland" on the Literary Review? 😬
Publication day for my new book Upland: The Strange History and Vital Future of Britain's Mountains. It's essentially about how they were made, literally and in our heads, and how we used and abused them, and how they still carry us along. Enjoy!
I have such an expertly curated algorithm that I'm seeing posts from Mexican street food restaurants in the US and this is how they're advertising the game tomorrow night. "Good vibes"
