Probably obvious, but a lot of publishing people think the rapid fall in nonfiction sales is primarily due to AI. Makes sense when you remember how popular self-help type are and how many people will now, say, ask ChatGPT for child rearing advice instead of buying How to Raise a Kid books.

but when I call Fox News and tell them about my journey through the fractal patterns on my friend's rug (which FELT like 18 days, at least) where I met a machine god (which might have been an ant? or a misplaced shard of potato chip?) I'm dismissed as a lunatic

Gabe Poirot says he spent 18 days in Heaven and met a Jesus who was six feet tall, made of fire, and overflowing with testosterone. Fox treated this as news. There's no evidence of this. Just a deeply manipulative story and a book to promote. www.friendlyatheist.com/p/a-christia...

that kind of discovery requires a different world of in-depth reviews and critical essays in a sphere of independent magazines and bloggers &c. in the absence of a robust bookish internet of this kind, what you get is books that vanish into the dark and can at best hope to be "rediscovered" some day

THE SEGWICK COUNTY ZOO PRINTED OUT MY DRAWING OF THE BABY TAWNY FROGMOUTH AND GAVE IT TO THE KEEPERS AND SHOWED IT TO THE FROGMOUTH ITSELF!!! HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!!! 💕💕💕💕

holy shit, this is the whole ballgame in a single paragraph gAI systems require mass theft of copyrighted works, for the explicit purpose of replacing the market for the people they stole from, and the people in charge knew what they were doing ahead of time, and did it anyway

Eye popping. Court just unsealed Summary Judgment motions in New York Times v OpenAI / Microsoft. Easy to see why the AI companies had so many redactions (pink). Their own people wrote the lede for NYT, the "largest theft of labor in human history"... "more and more substitutive..." /1

The trouble with the rationalists isn't the polyamory, and it isn't precisely the freaky sex stuff or the play parties, except inasmuch as all of that stuff is downstream of the actual problem: that they're part of an extremely insular, incestuous millenarian religious movement trying to build God

I keep seeing videos of a guy who catches crabs and lobsters, cracks all the barnacles off them, puts a shrimp in their claws and throws them back. can you imagine. abducted by aliens but they just give you a spa day and hand you two hot dogs and let you go

The fallacy that University leaders pushing AI are falling into is thinking that the point of undergraduate research is to find things out. It isn't. What students find out is typically already generally known. The point of undergraduate research is to learn how to find things out.

I cannot tell you what absolute fiction this is. AI is heading for a crash and this cackhanded Terminator narrative is being engineered to save them. The fact that the unsubstantiated testimony of a former employee has been the top story on BBC News all day is absurd and irresponsible.

“To leave no loopholes Hitler exacted from all officers and men of the armed forces an oath of allegiance—not to Germany, not to the constitution, which he had violated by not calling for the election of Hindenburg’s successor, but to himself.” -Shirer, Rise & Fall of the Thrid Reich, p. 375

Trump: "Please right your right hand. I pledge to the greatest president in the history of the United States. That loves us so much he can't even breath. That I will go out with my family, my friends, I'll do it any way - I don't care if I'm registered or not, I'm going to try to cheat like hell..."

Weird thing people try to do in AI debates is redefine plagiarism as just being about credit. No. Plagiarism is *passing off work you didn't do as your own*. Copying from public source (e.g. wikipedia), friend writing your essay who doesn't want credit, LLM writing it - all plagiarism.

“Tony [Gilroy] finally turned to me, and he said, ‘Hey, you just got to stop pitching plot. Plot is bullshit. Plot is what happens when you get the behavior right. Pitch me a line of dialogue, pitch me atmosphere, pitch me something visual. Stop pitching stuff that happens.’” 1/2
