I do so much free advertising for Scrivener @scrivenerapp.bsky.social (my favorite writing software) that I decided to get an affiliate link: www.literatureandlatte.com/scrivener-af...

Ultimately, this whole thing with the liar Bella Chacha (and her other pseudonyms) is the same procedure for when magazines discover plagiarism in their magazines. They evaluate, ask the supposed author questions pertaining to the work and writing as a whole, ask for any evidence, then judge.
Anyway, I don't have any sort of clear solution here. There's no magical solution to know 100% if any given piece of writing is AI-generated. And while it may be the case that writing styles will shift to avoid "AI tells," I hope that we're able to resist that self-policing as much as possible.
I place absolutely no blame on publishers who are protecting their integrity and principles. I also worry that the barriers to entry will only get higher for people who are neurodivergent in ways similar to me.

But. BUT. You wrote those words. You spent time with them. You can speak to why you wrote them the way you did, in a way someone who generates their text never can. That's why I'm so pleased to see that Bona Books made sure to talk to their suspected authors, instead of relying on only their gut.
And I've already seen the flares of anxiety from creatives who feel like they can't meet this or that burden of proof, but as someone who works with folks generating text for dayjob, they can't even remotely speak to what's in that text. Trust me: if you wrote the words, you'll know the words.
I also think their process is as good as it can get, for now. As I said in another post, AI checkers are bunk and anyone who relies on them will get as many (if not more) false positives as true. But talking to a writer? A creative? Asking them about their process? You can't generate creative joy.
Community saved us, this time. Another editor warned us. Other publishers shared what they were seeing. But whisper networks are not enough. Publishing needs collective tools, standards and action.
But the answer cannot be to close the gates. Small presses exist to find extraordinary writers who have not yet been given a platform. The answer is better process, better training, shared resources, and solidarity.
Purported ‘AI detection’ software is not the answer on its own. They can be biased, limited, racist, wrong. At most, they may be one indicative tool in a broader, fair, evidence-based process. Never proof by themselves.
We’re not saying authors should be treated with suspicion. That would be disastrous, especially for new, queer, disabled, neurodivergent, global-majority (or indeed any kind of marginalised) writers. Any response to AI HAS to protect access.
If you’re an editor, publisher, slush reader or industry organisation dealing with this: what resources would actually help? We want to hear from you. If this is relevant to your press, magazine, union, imprint, submissions team or writing group, please share it.

People with disabilities deserve the freedom to determine our own lives and our own futures. Too often and for too long, we’ve been denied that essential right. This Disability Pride month and every other month of the year, we’re fighting for a world where we can exist on our own terms.
