The headlines are still covering the cyclosporiasis outbreak from lettuce, but let's talk about a different summer, long ago. The headlines in Bavaria would have called it "summer diarrhea" & it was killing babies. Enter our hero, Professor Theodor Escherich of the Julius Hospital, Würzburg.

Finally, my first publication is out! We describe an exceptionally preserved new species of Metzgeriaceae liverwort from the Lower Cretaceous and reveal new insights into its growth mode and autoecology as an inhabitant of the subtropical wetlands of Las Hoyas. AlphaFold was always bait-and-switch; now Google confirms it. A hyper-narrow bioinformatrics model with actual science bolted on whose guesses can be experimentally checked was never a licence for socially-applied slop at scale, but it's done its job. Effort transferred to LLMs.
