Toot toot! 🐭 🎺 🎉 I’m delighted to reach the milestone of 15,000 followers! Thank you for joining me! Great to see so many of you interested in #Archaeology! Here’s a tiny Roman bronze mouse playing a trumpet! Perhaps too loudly as he’s covering his ear with a paw! 1st-2nd century AD #Archaeology

My photo shows a tiny bronze figurine of a mouse playing a Roman tuba, a long, straight bronze trumpet with a flared bell, used by the Roman military (though not exclusively). The mouse is seen in profile, standing facing left, head tilted upwards playing the trumpet which is held in the mouse’s right paw - right paw not seen in photo. It covers its left ear with its left paw, perhaps the sound of the trumpet is too loud! The figurine is 3.81 centimetres tall. The bronze mouse appears dark grey in colour. Displayed on a thin vertical metal stand on a black plinth against a beige surface and dark brown backdrop.

Small bronze mice statuettes were a very popular motif in Roman times, often attached to oil lamps and lampstands, a reference to the problem of mice gnawing at wicks and drinking lamp oil, a nuisance documented in various ancient texts. They’re often comically shown undertaking human activities out of proportion to their small size, which invoked the Hellenistic and Roman literary and artistic traditions of an ‘inverted world’, as discussed in an article by Philip Kiernan ‘The Bronze Mice of Apollo Smintheus’.

This table is reserved for those who fought and died for Ukraine. Today is the Day of Remembrance of the Defenders of Ukraine. Cafes, bookstores, restaurants, you name it, reserve one Memory Table for them. The bookstore I visited today had one, too. 🌻

An inspiring story in this thread - I have donated to groups listed on this website without knowing the full background to the wider project 👏

She spun up the website www.standwithminnesota.com It was basically a volunteer run emergency rent fund site at first, collecting everyone's disparate rent fundraiser links in response to Metro Surge. Then, people started personally adopting fundraisers to champion.

1/ Russia has shifted to a new air terror tactic in recent days — hitting Kyiv and other cities in small drone waves every 30–60 minutes around the clock. Retired Major Hetman warns alerts could last weeks with no all-clear at all, as Russia sends two or three drones every few hours.

Over the past 15 hours, eight air raid alerts have sounded in Kyiv. During the night, the Russians terrorized the capital with ballistic missiles, then switched to jet-powered drones. It is incredibly exhausting – which, of course, is exactly what Russia is counting on.

UK Parliament illuminated in blue and yellow to mark Ukraine's Independence Day. Prime Minister Andy Burnham is visiting Kyiv on his first trip abroad since taking office

So, according to the likes of Sam Altman, we are on the verge of AI genies that can make our wishes come true! Not if this political map of the UK is any example...

Wildly inaccurate map.
