Big tax results out of Missouri tonight: Voters statewide rejected by an huge margin a GOP ballot measure to phase out the income tax. They also renewed a sales tax to keep state parks free. And Kansas City approved a package of $1.7 billion of bonds for infrastracture.

Looks like another person got himself in immigration trouble, which makes me think it might be timely to give some guidance on ways to mitigate this particular risk. The story is cut off but you see at the bottom of the screenshot where it says he had arranged something with his employer 1/

Particularly with old/rare books, as material culture scholars will no doubt tell us, the material book itself is also valuable cultural information. It is an embodied artifact of past technologies (of paper, ink, etc.), economies, cultural practices, and more.

To return to my original, long-ago starting point: I brought up Everyman’s Library because its history demonstrates one thing so clearly: new luxury book lines tend to pop up alongside major book format shifts. We are seeing glitzy romantasy editions right when the mmpb has been declared dead.

There’s a general understanding that money and prestige are orthogonal in publishing. Literary fiction and poetry never sell, formulaic romances make bank, people who chase the market are sellouts, bestsellers pander to the lowest common denominator instead of being Authentic Art, etc.

So we have friends coming to visit from out of town this weekend, and the four of us olds have set our respective children the task of learning Seven Nation Army to play as a piano/violin duet. This feels like parenting heaven.

This is a wonderful think-piece. It explores novel possibilities before we get locked into less-than-ideal pathways. Tbh, the 2-tiered option is already consistent with pre-existing tendencies in the US system; for-profit schools, for example, are already considered a kind of second-tier degree.

i think the path of least resistance to universal coverage is a pincer movement (perhaps a…temporal pincer movement). you raise medicaid eligibility and lower medicare eligibility while also providing robust subsidies through obamacare. (de facto public option)
