Favorite Spielberg father plot is in JURASSIC PARK, where Dr Grant is like "I don't think I want kids" then is thrust into a situation where he has to protect a couple kids from mortal danger and at the end of the movie he's like "this validates my feelings about how I should never have kids"

Pre-YA, the middle-grade to genre pipeline was everything. Take your kids directly from Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret? to The Stand. That was a very good week for me.

As far as "books for kids" go I do sometimes wonder if the existence of a YA shelf robs young folks of the joys of early unsupervised exposure to the ranting of depraved communists and libertarian sex-weirdos in the SFF section, an important inoculation when it doesn't destroy 3-10 years of yr life
