My favorite emails from students are those with the subject, “What fish is this?” Here, we have a skilletfish, our local clingfish species that uses is suction cup-like pelvic fins to stick under crevices and in shells.

Check out this lovely profile of the University of California, Davis’s Peter Wainwright, whose lifelong fascination with fishes inspired a remarkable career in research and teaching. Peter was my postdoc advisor years ago when he was at Florida State University, and is awesome dude and mentor.

Among the Academies: A Lifelong Fascination With Fish

For Peter Wainwright, the academic path was simple: he simply followed his fascination with fish.“I dare say there wasn't a lot of deep thought about what direction I should go in my life,” he said. “...

If you're submitting a reference letter for a PRFB, I was surprised to not see any option for deleting and reuploading, which contradicts the info provided in the email requesting it. In fact, as soon as you select the file it is uploaded and you can't change it. Was fine for me, but beware.

Interior has reassigned ~30 of its most senior career staffers. Among those losing their longtime positions? The woman who directed the National Wildlife Refuge System for the last 10 years, and the man who ran the migratory bird program for the last 15.

New paper on saber-toothed blennies! Wherever we went we got bit by these feisty little #fishes so we started wondering what their whole deal was. We have 2 endemic Hawaiian species and we wanted to know where they came from. Many years and many more bites we finally have a bit of an answer. 🐟️ 🦑 🧪

Attention Ecologists! We are going to need *a lot* of ecologists. The First Lego League Teams need to speak with a scientist about their projects every year. Every year it's a different type of scientist. Last year was archaeologists. This year, ecologists! Sign up: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1F...

A fish is a teacher, wearing a button-up shirt with a collar. He says "Volunteer to speak with classrooms in front of a chalkboard that says "Skype a scientist needs YOU!". A snail on his desk says Help! And a shrimp says "Lego league is coming!" and a nervous seahorse says "this year's theme is ecosystems"

If a fish was a schoolteacher would they wear a short sleeve button up shirt and a tie, or JUST a tie?

#FossilFriday flashback: My lab published two major papers this month on 1) dental functional morphology and 2) vertebrate paleontology & paleobiogeography. It made me so proud of the research teams I've been a part of over the past decade, but it also prompted reflection on my academic path (🧵1/5)

The US built the greatest talent magnet ever, attracting the smart, skilled, and striving. They’d come to study, then stay and build things here, or leave with positive impressions and fruitful connections. Helped make the US wealthy and powerful. Then America chose to throw it away. And for what?
