#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1945: A strike by some 10,500 craft workers in the Conference of Studio Unions turns bloody when strikers battle police, studio guards and replacement workers. The conflict directly contributed to the passage of the Taft-Hartley Act and the Hollywood Blacklist. /1

Warner Bros. Studio firefighters turn high-pressure hoses on picketers on Hollywood Bloody Friday (also called “Black Friday”), Oct. 5, 1945. Studio police on studio rooftops also dropped tear gas canisters on the striking workers. Bloody Friday didn’t just crush the Conference of Studio Unions. It demonstrated that the fear of communism could be used to silence dissent and neutralize organized labor. By framing a dispute over wages and working conditions as a “Soviet plot,” studio executives wrote the playbook used by the House Un-American Activities Committee and paved the way for the Hollywood Blacklist. It helped corporate lobbying groups convince Congress that unions had grown too powerful, violent and radical. This accelerated the passage of the Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, which permanently weakened the legal power of organized labor. Ultimately, a two-hour violent confrontation created the blueprint for corporate dominance that still influences American labor today.

Susan Collins refuses to answer to new ProPublica reporting of a pay-to-play scheme between her and a defense contractor. Collins’s campaign manager responds to Zeteo’s reporting on her husband working for the lobbyist running her super PAC, admitting they still work together.

the reason my likely presidential candidate tier list has two people at the top - Ossoff and AOC - is that they are by far the most effective messengers of I Am Fucking Furious And There Must Be Consequences, which is the most deeply held conviction of the Dem base

Ossoff: "We are witnessing people drunk with power who are utterly reckless, utterly corrupt, and obviously believe that they live with impunity. They believe they're untouchable. They believe they're invincible. Let's prove them wrong."

Donald Trump also began telling the completely untrue story that he saw hundreds of Muslim Americans in New Jersey celebrating as the towers fell. He told that story so many times and it was such an obvious sign that he's not just a racist and a liar but a hate-monger. The media failed there too.

receipts for anyone who’s never heard this clip before (the reporters giving him a tongue bath and so much unearned respect is how we got here, but i digress)

Donal Trump is in his office across town when he makes this call, which is long after both towers were down. Mostly he talks about how he is sad about the stock market shutting for the day and his buildings. He was nowhere near. Nowhere. I was fucking closer than he was.

Key moments so far from a hearing on Trump's mail-voting EO: 🔺 Judge Talwani has repeatedly pushed back on the DOJ's arguments. 🔺 Only one state has told the administration it can comply with the rule in time for the midterms. 🔺 Talwani says she will try to issue a ruling by the end of the day.

Whoa! Pentagon officials are warning of Navy payroll shortfalls after funds meant for service member pay were raided to help cover war costs. 📌 An official says they had to use “imaginative” workarounds to avoid the shortfall.

This reinstatement happened for one reason: a union contract. She was brought back against managements wishes because she won the highest level of the grievance procedure, arbitration. This is how you can take the power back from people like Jeff Bezos: form a union.
