But one thing I know from bringing up kids and managing business is that if you expect a rule to be conformed to then it has to be enforced. Speeding is largely not enforced, then suddenly enforced very harshly, then not enforced. It's weirdly punitive to most people.

To take the toughest question "were school closures worth doing?" The government did not want to do it, it was not a default response, and at least the first time it was against an apocalyptic backdrop. It was a choice that, as much as I hate him, Matt Hancock did not do lightly.

"The left" were not in power, here on the US, during the worst of the pandemic. We had a fairly libertine right wing government who showed so little respect for Covid rules they consistently broke them. This conversation, about policy decisions, does need to engage with that!

I just... I feel like I'm going a bit mad? The British government very visibly opposed locking down, we spent all of November 2020 ignoring every sign in order to "save Christmas." The BBC's weakness was not deference to science, but to the government! Laura K was reposting videos of buckets!

it is almost like the actual complaints are more "I want to be taken seriously without doing the reading" or "I am upset when the answers to these questions don't match up to my feelings"

It is quite strange how little the actual public inquiry we're having into the UK's Covid response - the one that's publishing in-depth reports every few months - factors into the "you're not even allowed to ask these questions" complaints. We are, in fact, officially asking these questions!

Yes lockdown was really tough for kids. Lots of those kids are teenagers now so maybe as a thank you our establishments could stop deliberately making even more things worse for them due to a weird systemic hatred of our own youth

I think it's genuinely important to defend the principle of things like the lockdowns, even if not the exact way they were implemented and enforced, because I think if you want any kind of progressive end you also need people to be comfortable with sacrifice for a positive but distant end goal

Just yet another in the long line of unfortunate BBC "mistakes" since 2015 that - purely coincidentally! - worked to the benefit of the Conservative Party and against the Labour Party.

The PM killed an untold number of people during a pandemic and burnt £850 million and he was depicted in state media as our benevolent saviour, I think that drove me mad and I never recovered, the state literally convinced people to willingly be culled en masse by an infectious disease

If we’re discussing covid, back in August 2020 the Prime Minister of the UK, Rishi Sunak, introduced a programme that subsidised £850m for people to congregate in enclosed spaces and get infected with the disease that killed people, then the state broadcaster depicted him as a superhero
