Hi, I'm being made redundant by the University of Southampton at the end of this month. I'm desperately looking for work. I'll consider all offers but have particular skills in policy, strategy and research. I also have a consultancy service I offer. Please let me know if you hear of anything

@jdportes.bsky.social ref today’s discourse re Robinson.
what the right basically want are loose rules on hate speech combined with tight rules on personal abuse (so they don't get abuse). the far right want no rules on hate speech at all, which is where they differ
📚"Covers designed by folk who didn't bother to read the book" Episode 2: Henry James, 'The Turn of the Screw' (1898) The novel is a #C19th gothic tale of a governess caring for 2 cherubic children who may or may not be in league with ghosts. Also...that's a nut.
📚"Covers designed by folk who didn't bother to read the book" Episode 1: Florence Marryat's Blood of the Vampire (1897). This book features a female vampire who doesn't know she's a vampire, who drains life not blood, and is enjoying a holiday in a Belgian seaside town. #BadBookCovers #C19th

Looking forward to hearing @channel4tv.bsky.social justify this unfathomably reckless and damaging title, let alone anything else. The journalistic equivalent of throwing a hornet's nest into an A&E ward, to 'raise awareness of injuries'.
Only just found out about this For the record, you don't get multiple genetic markers and one of the most effective medications known to science with 'social constructs' Channel 4, this is, in scientific parlance, an absolute fu*king disgrace that will genuinely endanger lives #c4 #ADHD

Just a thought from further down this thread, & thinking about @samfr.bsky.social note earlier- what is the purpose of a school in both normal and extraordinary circumstances.
Three thoughts on the pandemic discourse. 1) you can't reach a view on what to do next time because next time the infectiousness and mortality will be different from last time. 2) presumably we'd start out thinking a vaccine will arrive much faster, because of the new technologies and experience.

Why bother with a 30 post thread about Pelennor Fields? Because I love the movies, love them. But in the books the army of ghosts don’t come and sweep the field. They are done after Pelagir. Which means it isn’t a supernatural miracle. It’s a human victory. Not gods or magic. People
At the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Mordor had crossed the Anduin, destroyed Gondor’s forward defenses, surrounded Minas Tirith, and breached its Great Gate. Two smaller relief forces were still separated and unable to coordinate. And yet Mordor lost. How? 🧵

Also highly recommend subscribing to the @financialtimes.com who are one of the last proper newspapers left standing, and deserve the support.
Right, bills weigh me, and the coffers are close to empty. Who needs some research done/archive records copied? I’m excellent and there‘s no project too big or small!
The last bit here is key & actually why lots of UTCs & Studio Schools failed.
One last point - are schools suddenly supposed to be experts on the local economy and trade/industry sector balance? Who is going to be responsible for working out what the curriculum should emphasise and tailoring it? Have we got a lot of research/sociology/pedagogy money earmarked for this? Oh...
@duncanweldon.bsky.social actually this is the biggest model challenge.
And good luck finding businesses to offer meaningful work experience to hundreds of thousands of 14 and 15 year olds. As ever a failure to acknowledge that our big challenge with vocational ed is our labour market.
