EUrope and beyond - mostly global affairs, some diplomacy, climate, technology, cycling and almost always humans. Once again back in Vienna after Oslo, Stockholm, Brussels, Damascus, Mexico City, Granada and LA 🌍

BREAKING: Electrification Action Plan dropped. The EU just committed to doubling electrification: 46% of final energy consumption by 2040, up from 23% today, where it has sat for a decade. My rapid response analysis of the Electrification Action Plan: open.substack.com/pub/janrosen...

Nine times faster: the EU wants to double electrification by 2040

The Commission has launched its Electrification Action Plan. A 46% target and some serious policy measures.

Very good article in the NYT about the global trend toward EV’s, while the US goes in the opposite direction, primarily because of Trump’s actions. For example, in Norway, 98% of new car purchases are EV’s. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/15/m...

The EU and Austria now officially attribute the 2020 cyberattack against the Austrian MFA to Russia. The goal of the operation was to gather information related in particular to Ukraine and Russia. The Russian embassy in Vienna denies the allegations, just as it did in 2020.

The most talked-about member of Syria’s new parliament may be actress Rouzaina Lazkani. But her appointment is also a window into a deeper story: how Syria’s emerging political system is being built through overlapping patronage, business and social networks.

Syria’s New Parliament of Networks

The biographies of those sitting in the People’s Assembly show that it is neither monolithic nor strictly factional, but simply the revolution's memory, given a political afterlife

The latest cases of Russian disinformation targeting German parties except the far right. Each individual attack could be dismissed as insignificant, but the combined and cumulative effects of this continuous political warfare on Western democracy should not be underestimated.

Russia's latest batch of fake news posts targets parties in Germany from the far-left to centre-right, but stopping short of the far right, for obvious reasons. Note the very similar numbers of replies, views, and reposts, signs of bot networks boosting the post, but little to none real engagement.

CHILD’S PLAY: I found the perfect way to make an iPhone child-friendly, one that completely blocks web browsing but allows tracking and navigation. It’s not a paid-for 3rd party app, it’s completely free. Why is Apple not highlighting this great feature more? @wired.com www.wired.com/story/this-b...

This Buried Apple Feature Turns an iPhone Into the Perfect Kids’ Dumb Phone

Apple built a tool for people with cognitive disabilities, but I accidentally discovered it’s also the best kids’ phone setup no one is talking about—not even Apple.
