A friend was a sort of background guy in La Traviata, where the opera house hired a bunch of bodybuilders to just be buff onstage during the anvil song. At one of the rehearsals the bodybuilders got into a fistfight because one guy called another's ankles "puny."

Back in my day we didn’t scrape music from the internet to feed to algorithms and make slop. No. We bought the musical score to the most recent popular adventure movie, stripped it of context in our heads, and used it to soundtrack writing our fantasy novels, like HONEST thieves.

I’m a weirdo who basically only listens to anime OST soundtracks and film scores while I’m writing, doesn’t listen to the radio, and essentially only hears new pop music when it’s sent to me. Where’s my fucking cultural cachet, rolling stone?

This kind of take made a Rolling Stone writer so mad they wrote a whole piece about it.

One of the things I think about a lot now when writing is the fact that if a previously beloved character snaps and kills a bunch of people in response to another character doing something that upsets them, there is a not-insubstantial portion of the audience who will blame the other character.

Man, I just don't get this sort of thing. People can be fans of a villainous character and then fight to the death for their right to strip their blorbos of all their aura and turn them into smol beans who apparently just ineffectually stood there for three movies.

I'm feeling the temptation to start collecting Custodes and this is vexing because I haven't remotely finished my Grey Knights yet. The new sculpts look so cool though.

what's the most insane hiring shibboleth you've ever heard, non-coffee edition

Forever ago I downloaded an app to help me track my daily mood. I long ago stopped using it but I have somehow not deleted it yet. Every day it negs me, asking me to record my mood. Every day I ignore it.

But what if this chair was actually dangerously comfortable?

Applying to local book faires because it's time to begin doing the hybrid author table thing.

My thoughts on the whole nepo baby thing are colored by the fact that as many successful children of successful people there are in the arts, there are way MORE children of those people who have never been able to succeed because they genuinely suck at the thing their parents were good at.

There’s so much to be excited about in my life but at the same time the powerful sense that none of it matters and the grey malaise behind it is lurking in the back of my head.

We need more things made from people’s deep personal feelings, not less. We need less committee, less algorithm. The good stuff comes from people souls without being heavily tampered with by rich businessmen who know nothing about art or story. People want to connect with that gem inside.

I still think about my scavenger friend who’s into bone collecting and taxidermy yelling—as we passed a dead raccoon on the side of the highway on the way to a sword tournament—“FREE RACCOON!” He’s now living in the Catskills hunting mushrooms and boiling dead coyotes with his polycule. He’s happy.

Remembering my mantra for these books, tonight. “Hero” in the classical, sardonic sense. Doers of great deeds. Bearers of great shame. Saviors of the world and ruiners of damn near everything they touch.
