separately i think those organizations are clearly not up to this, but one of the reasons they are not up to this is that their belief in AI alignment risks are essentially theological beliefs that are conveyed to them via strong social bonds and emotionally compelling writing

I have no idea if this changes, but if we froze progress here, I’d say the job is far from dead, it just involves a new higher level programming language
2026 is wild because you can just say shit like this and everyone will be like "oh yeah, the text elementals, that's a good phrase for what they are" instead of looking at you like jesse what the fuck
Like, if the people making these things weren’t apocalyptic millennialists, they would be ok with accepting the idea that they’ve invented text-based river spirits and not a God. Which is cool and interesting, and we’d be making more progress integrating this into human social life if they could.
We’re going to hear about how everyone loved Dolly, and that feels true. But it’s good to remember, and to her credit, that she was attacked for her AIDS activism, her vaccine advocacy, her LGBTQ+ support and even, more recently, for her reading initiatives. She ALWAYS stood firm when it mattered.
hello my name is jrr tolkien and i wrote a whole book series about what it would be like if some funny little guys who just like to hang out and eat and have friends were drafted into a nightmarish conflict vastly beyond their understanding and were forever changed by it also wwi was normal for me
Story time! Six years ago, my first book, The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking), came out. It was fun to write! I got to share all my cosmology fun facts and dig deep into all the ways the universe might end. I had SO much fun with it, I thought, "maybe I should write another book?" 1/?
One wild thing to me about subagent orchestration that it’s basically Claude saying “I’m not doing this, but I know a guy” and that guy is also Claude.
Shabbat Shalom to everyone, and especially to everyone who refuses to compromise on anyone else’s humanity.
Hold on, did everyone do so much AI last night that US-east-1 started to melt?
Writing code for work is basically just overseeing a bunch of coding agents. Like a video game where you have to trick all the MPCs into doing your quests.
so the claude code plan is five pages long and i pressed accept and put it into yolo mode. making sure the plan is right is, essentially, my entire job now.

NASA just dropped more than 12,000 photos from the Artemis II mission. It'll take me a few days to go through them all, but so far it's one stunner after another. Link: eol.jsc.nasa.gov/SearchPhotos... Credit: NASA/Artemis II Crew (h/t @jonostrower.com)
Today in social justice toolkit: A dilemma action is a strategic action that forces your opponent into a lose-lose situation. You've given them only bad options. I give some examples & then we talk about how to design them. This one's pretty important. Read and share, please?

Do you ever say no to a project idea because you can't be bothered to describe it to Claude?
The NYPL Digital Collections API is being quietly sunsetted in August. The only announcement I can find is behind the dev login for API access. When I look for more info, all that's returned is articles from 2012-2016 announcing this leap forward in public info access. Anyone know anything?
NASA isn't why the US doesn't have universal healthcare, or a social safety net. The US doesn't have those things because politicians with the power to provide them choose specifically not to (with varying levels of support from voters). Enthusiasm for human spaceflight doesn't drive that choice.
The machines the Luddites smashed were literally the machines that let women work.
they should invent a weekend that struggles against the week for dominance, often coming out ahead and being longer than the week
I’m thinking more about how we’re all millions of flawed sense-making units having millions of different lived experiences of our current, utterly chaotic situation and (for the most part, the exceptions hopefully are obvious) all trying to see each other through.
Is there a Vietnamese spot in Pittsburgh called "Danh Tanh Banh" because there should be. If you steal this just like, give me a free banh mi sometime idk
ME: How's it look? MECHANIC LOOKING UNDER MY IMAGINATION'S HOOD: *wiping hands on a rag* I see your problem. You've been filling this thing up with despair when it's supposed to run on joy.
