I had never seen a chart where those concerned and dismissive about climate change are equally opposed to the same thing -- until @yaleclimatecomm.bsky.social started polling respondents about AI data centers. (And this survey was conducted in the spring)
Just heard @rory-stewart.bsky.social on @therestpolitics.bsky.social say that "we [the UK] still consume more carbon than we have ever done—we just have the t-shirts made in China". I've heard this point being made elsewhere recently too. And it is simply not true.

That's a LOT of manfacturing capacity that's come online in the last months. Some of the panels will be for export, but many will likely be used domestically.
Published estimates of AI energy use per prompt (~0.3 watt-hours) appear reassuring small. But they are increasingly disconnected from how we actually use AI. I think we're underestimating how much deep psychic damage was inflicted on UK conservatives when coal was deleted from their power system, gas was halved, most of that was replaced by wind and solar and there WASN'T an immediate blackout apocalypse ember-energy.org/data/electri...
Just a big Norwegian website returning to the pandemic-era "argument" that as the people who died in the heatwave would have died anyway, they weren't really killed by the heatwave. Uses the word "harvesting" to describe their deaths for good measure.

This paper finds that moving to +fully organic+ egg farming in the UK would produce an extra 877,000 tonnes of CO2. That's equivalent to 0.2% of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions. Not huge. I'm in favour of plant-based diets but i don't know if this is a difference that's worth stressing over.
