Baltimore police have literally shut down Fells Point on weekends. Street barricades. Checking ID. All to discourage gatherings of teenagers. The downside -- fewer customers overall. One business owner said business is down 22% wbaltv.com/article/fell...

I would just like to point out that I moved to Baltimore as a non–baseball fan who was expressly ready to *become* one, and Elias has, to my admittedly inexpert eyes, done his damnedest to discourage me from adopting the Orioles as My Own Guys. I would like to?! Dude, what are you doing.

Fuckin' leave trans people alone, good grief. No one (no reactionary right-winger, no "concerned" citizen, no feminist of any stripe who purports to—and ought to—defend me) has ever shown me a single good reason to be more afraid of trans people than of the oppressive forces arrayed against them.

Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.

i don't believe anyone has "good-faith" concerns about trans women in sports in 2026. there's been too much time to hear the actual evidence, the actual people affected, and the role the debate plays in attempts to purge trans people from American life. anybody picking that side has made a choice

If everybody did this, even places where people can't mask effectively (restaurants, bars, etc.) would get safer for everyone because transmission would be lower overall. Audiences mask = performers are safer. Students mask = teachers are safer. We have fuckin' got to learn to help each other out.

I am 53 and have been essentially forced into retirement. I thought it was just me, until I found an entire community of women in the same situation on Instagram. So many of us have just been told that we simply have nothing to contribute to society anymore.

I keep thinking about how often the mass layoffs in media, government and big companies, especially women and people of color, will lead to poorer outcomes for years because the people who would point out potential problems or blind spots were deemed non-essential, a "bad fit", and/or too expensive.

I got an(other) offer from an AI aggregator news site that wants to pay me to mention them in my newsletter. They are offering $1.14 a click, which on my usual stats would make me $5-10k no problem.

I think one reason data center outrage is so pronounced is people spent decades recycling and composting and otherwise scrimping to offset energy use and protect clean water, and the second we hit an inflection point for cheap electricity the banking industry said we’re taking all of it, fuck you

For the one millionth time this is why we need a free N95 mask program everywhere. Masks are important tools we all need to stay healthy throughout our lifetimes.

I’m not trying to be rude, but many of us, especially in DC and Memphis, have been saying exactly this for months and people weren’t listening

My parents live in a neighborhood that is unofficially known as the "city of trees," and the difference in temperature and livability when crossing in and out of that area effect from historic urban forestry is fucking stark. We need trees everywhere we can reasonably put them.

I was back in Immigration Court this week, this time for the hearing of a sweet little three-year-old girl, I’ll call her Estrella. She’s been in federal custody, separated from her family for more than 10 months – even though her mom lives here in NYC. The cruelty is truly mind-boggling. 🧵

What really enrages me about it is that it's meant to sound labor-coded. It's meant to sound like if you care about rape or sexual assault or your comrade calling you a cunt, you must be some corporate management bitch who hates workers. Because real working class solidarity means tolerating rape

This is wild. 93% of the renewable electricity generation added to the Irish grid over that last decade now powers data centers, rather than reducing fossil fuel use. Data centers have pretty much annihilated the health and climate benefits those renewables could have provided.

After four days of heatwave and near two days without power (one day of overlap, but my dad's house is a dilapidated construction zone with no AC anyway <grim shrug>), we are now having a day of breezes, mild storms and gentle, intermittent rain. Thank you, electrical workers, and thank you, clouds.

Like many US children, I didn't learn much of anything at school about Haiti or about uprisings of enslaved people. Some brief mentions, and nothing that explicitly discussed this (important, obvious!) angle. Reading about it later in re Haiti was illuminating and infuriating. It explains so much.
