Worrying scenes in the Channel today, for all interested in asylum policy and maritime tactics. A small boat from Normandy spent more than 30 hours at sea. Those on board now on their 2nd rescue vessel as Border Force forced to play cat and mouse with far-right activists who have their own boat.

I’ve worn a grubby RNLI cap for decades. I sound London, but I was born in Truro and I was a basically feral (Gen X) kid wandering the coast path with a dog until sunset for a lot of my early life. The lifeboats are in the fabric like trawlers and farms and pasties and fish and chips.

Bonus extra this morning. I saw the (rather elusive) hedgehog that’s taken up residence in the garden. He accepted some hedgehog food. Now butler to the hedgehog as well as the upstairs cat (who doesn’t like the hedgehog food).

This is my special friend from the upstairs flat. By meowing outside my bedroom window during the night, she’s trained me to get up, go outside, and unlock her door so that she can go up to breakfast and bed. She pays me, her butler, with daily visits, head butts and purrs. And sometimes a mouse.

I'm not surprised but I'm truly disgusted that this narrative of "dangerous fighting age men posing a threat to women and children" is genuinely doing the rounds on the media with almost no push back at all. This is 1930s level stuff.
