Broad interests in Developmental Biology, Evolution and Disease

This finding provides broad comparative support for the longstanding hypothesis that the nuclear-to-cytoplasmic (N/C) ratio acts as a timer of genome activation. Moreover, this scaling accurately predicts ZGA timing across diverse animals from genome size and egg volume of a species alone. 8/15

Model of N/C as a universal clock of ZGA

Then, what determines ZGA onset?? We correlated multiple genomic, developmental and ecological features with ZGA timing and, cutting to the chase, we found that the log ratio of genome size vs. egg volume very strongly scaled negatively with ZGA onset in cell cycles! 7/15

Strong negative correlation between log DNA size / egg volume & ZGA onset in cell cycles

Grateful to be part of this great team. Thanks to @eliasbarrigalab.bsky.social for all the coordination effort! Looking forward to the exciting science to come.

Grateful to have been awarded an #HFSPResearchGrants by @hfspo.bsky.social With @jrmarmor.bsky.social @cabd-upo-csic.bsky.social Charlie Duclut @institutcurie.bsky.social & @djcohen.bsky.social @princeton.edu we will explore hidden roles of organs as electrochemical organizers of #morphogenesis 🤓

The 2026 Visual System Development GRC and GRS are fast approaching. Jeremy Kay, Kristen Kwan, Robert Johnston, and I have built an exciting program that we hope you will enjoy. Looking forward to seeing everyone at the meeting this summer in beautiful Maine. Register and RT!

Guess who’s turning 217 today? It’s Charles Darwin! 🥳 Born in 1809, he transformed the way we understand the natural world. He developed the theory of evolution by natural selection in his 1859 best-seller, ‘On the Origins of Species’. Send him your birthday wishes in the comments! 👇

A white statue of Charles Darwin sitting crossed legged on a chair. On the image, there’s text saying ‘Happy 217th birthday Charles Darwin!’. A birthday hat with polka dots has been photoshopped on top of the statue’s head.

I think that, like with art, papers offer an opportunity for you to tell the story your own way. Could another person research the same question? Yes. However, each person has the opportunity to do it and communicate it in their own way, and we must protect that 🧪

Lamentamos profundamente el fallecimiento de nuestro socio Máximo Ibo Galindo, investigador de encefalopatías del desarrollo, como el síndrome de Dravet y pionero en la utilización de #Drosophila en la investigación de enfermedades humanas en España. DEP
