"If this is what it takes to get a rom-com greenlit these days, maybe we should just let them die. Death with dignity is surely a better fate for the genre than fascist capitulation." Zero stars for this piece of shit movie. My review of ONE NIGHT ONLY for @ebertvoices.bsky.social

One Night Only review: Pull out from this sex-negative rom-com

If this is what it takes to get a rom-com greenlit these days, maybe we should just let them die.

There are trans adults who never had to go through the wrong puberty. There are trans teens going to prom as their real selves. There are t4t couples raising kids together. As much as they are trying to destroy trans existence, especially trans kids, we've come so far and we aren't going back!

Being queer. I know things are hard right now, but sex was illegal in many states, marriage didn't exist, AIDS was a death sentence, being out in high school was unthinkable

Saw a post saying "I don't want NSFW accounts to talk about voting, just let me jack off" Buddy, NSFW artists and sex workers are being constantly attacked by a government of nonces trying to distract from their own crimes by pinning the blame on porn. They have the right to speak up about this.

#bugsky (is that a thing?) I have an indoor potted plant that occasionally shows evidence of being eaten (leaves chomped) and recently a small stem cut clean off. Weeks pass between these incidents. I have no pets. No other plants have this problem. What's eating my plant?

I am banning SFF writers from writing panic attack scenes. None of you write them well and all of you are writing them the same way. Stop it. I am sick to death of seeing the same scene over and over again in so much literature.

In 1986, contracting HIV meant you were going to die, usually slowly, painfully, and alone. Now it's a chronic illness like hypertension. In 1986, gay and lesbian couples couldn't have their relationships legally recognized and had to adopt elaborate legal workarounds.

Food, man. Food is so much better than it was in 1986. All of it. Poor-people food, restaurant food, fresh food, frozen food. Food is just a hell of a lot better.

air travel is one of those experiences that has gotten monotonically worse over my entire lifetime

question though: has *anything* in the last 40+ years genuinely gotten *better*?

like, there's *more* stuff, sure, but is any of it *better*?

This is of course referring to bathroom discourse. I saw a video of what could have been a trans man in the women’s bathroom, with outrage from the comments. Everyone saying “he’s not trans bc he’s not even trying to look like a woman” completely ignoring that trans can go the other way too

Why do cis people hear the word “trans” and automatically think “woman“. Cishets think the only way to be trans is to be a trans woman. They don’t even realize trans men exist. It’s so frustrating

Texas isn't a red state. It's a state held hostage by gerrymandering and voter suppression. Hell, earlier this week they announced they're shutting down half the voting centers in Tarrant County (that's Fort Worth, 2.2 million people) and kicked everyone out of the hearing who wanted to comment.

This is a sentimental essay about politics, which I know isn't the fashion, and yet the editors at @newrepublic.com let me write something personal about the Lone Star State. Link in the replies.

I’ve been screening our documentary with organizing communities in the South. So far, the organizers mention data centers first at every single event. From racial justice orgs to old school activists who don’t usually think about tech policy. This has legs.
