Meta is spending $600 billion+ to build out its AI model. That model is being aggressively integrated into platforms used by 3.9 billion people. This week, Meta announced its AI will be trained on content from Newsmax, the far-right website with a history of promoting pro-Trump conspiracy theories.
As an incoming SUNY faculty member, I was happy to hear our union’s new contract addresses AI: "The agreement includes wording that all SUNY courses will be under the 'direction and responsibility' of humans, and that humans will have the 'ultimate accountability' for work done by AI systems.”
Another day, another reminder that, no matter how carefully you craft your arguments, how precisely you choose your words, how meticulously you rearrange & reorder paragraph after paragraph after paragraph, some people will bring to & take away from your work only exactly what they want & intend to.
I cannot imagine any responsible way to use AI as a Black woman. Using it responsibly for work isn't predicated on how we use it but on how the evaluator considers the user reasonable. And well...we don't generally get that benefit of the doubt.

It's wild because comp is the most widely offered course at any university across the nation & many faculty across all English fields teach comp more than they teach in their expertise. 1000s of people who don't even study comp rely on the CCCCs for resources and conversations abt teaching writing.
My experience as CCCC member (and later as a Caucus leader) is that the work of making sense of things and making plans for the future is work that happens better in community, something that CCCC Caucuses, SIGs, and Standing Groups have been doing very, very well for decades now.
Regional networks and support are SO important, but following CCCC‘s dechartering, I believe we need national and international organizing to maintain our discipline and combat the intensifying authoritarianism that brought down our org in the first place.
this news about CCCC (and the manner in which these plans were made) is unbelievable. My first experience at an academic conference was at C's (as an undergrad attendee in 2003!) and this network has been an invaluable resource for myself and many friends and colleagues over the years.

Imagine the conversation we could have about this travesty if NCTE didn’t require Cs officers and executive committee members to sign confidentiality agreements. Folks should also ask NCTE about how and whether their lucrative grant/partnership with Google was part of what Cs “culture” threatened.

I wish the reporter had expiunded on the differences between the organizations’ AI stances. NCTE, for example, has partnered with Google, while CCCC has started recognizing a range of student and teacher responses, including refusal.

I'm in Paris, and the entire time I've been here I've seen advertisements for Le Monde's special issue TOUT LE MONDE DETESTE L'IA (All the World Hates AI). I've seen graffiti on metro ads marking them as AI SLOP, and a big scrawl at one stop that read F*CK IA.
Just think of all the pedagogical innovations and research on best practices for teaching over the decades that have gotten zero support and funding for implementation, but AI has no proven pedagogical value and is literally sucking up all the funding available in higher ed. These are facts.
